Prep Hoops Florida is your year-round source of high school and grassroots basketball coverage from across the state. Here are some 2024 guards I’m excited to see take the floor this season.
Loghan Downie, A 6-6 senior wing has a smooth shooting stroke where he can score on all three levels and does a good job using his size to an advantage on the offensive end. He does a great job at making crisp passes finding open teammates and getting them involved on the offensive end as well. On the defensive end, Downie has a good physical presence where he can guard multiple positions and rebounds at an alarming rate. He is poised to have a good senior season where he has received offers from Allegheny College, Curry College, Keiser University and several others.
Gavin Dunn, A 6-3 senior combo guard plays with a good combination skillset of speed and purpose when he has the basketball in his hands. Dunn is at his best when he excels at the rim finishing through traffic against multiple defenders. He has also gained more consistency and confidence when it comes to scoring from beyond the arc as he can create separation off the bounce. On the defensive end, Dunn is long and quick when it comes to securing rebounds and blocking shots at the front of the rim. He also recovers a lot of ground where he can be active in the passing lanes getting tips and deflections as well. Look for Dunn to have a promising senior season as he has the intangibles to become an elite prospect at the next level.
Jordin Bell, A 6-3 senior guard who can shoot the ball effectively well from the perimeter whether it’s off the catch or off the bounce. He also has shown he can score at the front of the rim off the attack where he has improved drastically over the summer. On the defensive end, Bell does a great job at challenging shots at the front of the rim as well as recovering out on the perimeter. He is also an underrated rebounder for his size who can quickly push the ball in transition off missed shots. Bell is also a disruptor in the passing lanes where he makes hustle plays and going after the 50-50 ball. Bell has received interest from several mid-major D1 schools since the summer Live Period.
Highlights
Jordan Tillery, A 6-5 senior guard who excels when it comes to scoring in transition or in the half court. Tillery also has a knack where he guards the opposing team’s best player where he can be very effective as well. He is a slasher and plays with an unselfish attitude where he gets his teammates involved early and often. Tillery is a very active defender where he is seemed to be an above-average rebounder and rim protector for his size. Tillery is a Georgia Southern commit who will look to have a big senior season for a loaded Oak Ridge squad.
Michael Drayton III, A 6-3 senior guard who impresses me with his pure athleticism and being unafraid to finish around the rim. He plays with a ton of aggressiveness on the offensive end where he can score off the bounce as well as off the catch and can play under control. On the defensive end, Drayton constantly applies great on-ball pressure as he is quick and has elite speed to maintain both guard positions. He is also considered to be an above-average rebounder for his size and uses his length to an advantage. Look for Drayton to have a solid senior season who has high upside to be a future college prospect.
Highlights
Malcolm Warthen
Malcolm Warthen
Malcolm Warthen, A 6-1 senior guard who is a complete player where he can score off the dribble or off the catch. He has built more consistency with his jump shot and has great court vision where he gets his teammates involved. Warthen is also very athletic on the offensive end where he can rebound exceptionally well finishing at the front of the rim. Warthen is coming off a junior season where he averaged over 25 points per game for West Nassau. On the defensive side, Warthen is very versatile where he can guard multiple positions using his speed and length to an advantage.
