. He made shots from the three-point line and also had some strong dunks on the night. Cosme was also superb at setting the table with his playmaking ability but also made big shots when defenders gave him space. Brother Rice went 2-0 on the night.
Thornton
The Wildcats are always a must-watch because they have PHI #1 regardless of class

on the team and he looked amazing. Strong moves on the baseline, mid-post takes, effortless dunks, and jump hooks. A big boost to Thornton would also be

another transfer who was unstoppable driving to the rim. He had a stretch where he scored four times off the bounce and into traffic for tough buckets. He seems to be primed for a breakout year.
Kenwood
Always one of the more talented teams in the city and state. Got a lift from

and his strength to get to the rim and shed defenders that are smaller than him.

is by far one of the better rim protectors in the state. Even in a loss, the Broncos look to be very dangerous when they get everything in order.

After a slow start in their game

picked up their intensity in the backcourt. Josh the steady setup man and DJ the athletic scoring guard put pressure on opposing teams’ ball handlers.

is a name that’s starting to look the part. Playing more around the rim hitting shots from mid-range and doing a much better job at defending in the post. Pettigrew also looks to be more fluid and understands the game better.

also had a terrific showing and looked good making shot after shot from deep. He looks for the best shot and not just any shot. One thing you don’t see much from underclassmen.
Homewood Flossmoor
In the marquee game of the night The Vikings got off to a great start with efforts from
Bryce Heard

. He was very aggressive at attacking the basket, strong pull-up jumpers and tough body controlled layups were key. Later in the game he hit a corner three and tried to complete a “Space Jam” like dunk over a defender. His teammate
Gianni Cobb

looked good too pushing the pace of the game doing what he does best scoring off drives by blowing past defenders. A key aspect of Cobb’s game that’s keeps on improving is his willingness to share the ball and find players slashing to the rim. H-F would also get key contributions from

the 6’0 guard who made tough shots when the games were close. JD was able to score off hard drives to the bucket jumping into defenders and shielding himself and the ball. H-F looked good and considering they have other key pieces missing I’m sure they will be ready at the start of the season.
Whitney Young
Young looked good as well with a few guys also not playing. They seem to get a huge lift from sophomore guard
Nasir Rankin

who seems to have a second gear last night. Rankin looked the part of a three level scoring guard. He made several plays where he attacked the rim and hit reverse layups for points.

also had some runs where he was able to make plays on fastbreaks opportunities for others and himself. The big lift of the night had to be from
Howard Williams

as the freshman forward seems to be settling in well with the Dolphins. Williams took the liberty of forcing Heard into tough shots and even getting a clean block on a dunk attempts that the refs called a foul on. Howard also scored well in to post and on the perimeter throughout the game giving the Dolphins a bright outlook on the season and the future.
