After previously covering several of the high profile players that further cemented their reputations. Following is an overview of some new players who are showing improvement or are beginning to announce themselves as prospects.
Clayton Heuker Clayton Heuker 6'5" | SF McBain | 2027 State MI 6-3 2027 McBain(pictured) Hailing from rural Northern Michigan. Heuker is going to play with one of the top Division III in teams in the entire state this year. While the Ramblers are not playing in the league. Heuker made the trip down to run with the GRBB. A collection Grand Rapids Storm players whose squads are not participating. As a player who yet to play a high school basketball. Hueker more than belonged with a talented group that included Ferris St commit Jaxson Whitaker Jaxson Whitaker 6'4" | SG Muskegon Reeths-Puffer | 2024 State MI . Played with a maturity that belied his age. Didn’t force things. Has an advanced physical profile. Was able to pin defenders down in the post. While also taking them off the dribble. Showed a quick second jump on a handful of offensive rebounds and put backs. If he continues to develop his game and grow physically. The ceiling is really high on this prospect.
Jack Bowen Jack Bowen 6'6" | PF Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2025 State MI 6-6 2025 Grand Rapids Catholic Central The story with Catholic Central last year was their lack of size in the post. With the full year presence of transfer Isaiah Hamlet Isaiah Hamlet 6'8" | PF Homeschool | 2025 State MI and the development of Bowen. I don’t see that being as much of an issue this year. There is nothing flashy about Bowen. However he is a good athlete who shows the ability to play above the rim. Quick feet should make him a factor defensively. Statewide watchers expecting a drop off after the graduation of Durral Brooks Durral Brooks 6'2" | PG Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2024 State MI . Would not have liked what they saw on Sunday. There is still a lot of young talent in the Cougar program.
Keane Hinkle Keane Hinkle 5'10" | PG Byron Center | 2025 State MI 5-9 2025 Byron Center Byron Center is almost the polar opposite of Catholic Central. A ton of size down on the blocks. While waiting for some young guards to develop. On Sunday it looks like that process is beginning to come to fruition. Hinkle is still on the small side. However the lefty played with more assertiveness and strength than I have seen in prior settings. Offsets the size with quickness and a clever knack for finishing at the basket. Good shooter with a quick release. Should get plenty of looks off of kick outs with the Bulldogs post attack.
Cassius Bont Cassius Bont 6'2" | PG Byron Center | 2026 State MI 6-1 2026 Byron Center Bont is the opposite type of prospect than his teammate Hinkle. Has plenty of size for either backcourt position at the high school level already. Does not look or play like an underclassmen. Is not shy and attacks the basket without fear. Has dealt with injuries early in his career. Hoping to see a full season out of him this year. Will probably play the two in the upcoming season. However has the ball handling ability to play the point. Barring a late growth spurt. That will probably be his long term position.
Colin Heyboer 6-5 2025 Grandville I am always impressed with Cameron Regnerus Cameron Regnerus 6'7" | PF Grandville | 2024 State MI . Will team with Corbin Heckman Corbin Heckman 6'4" | SF Grandville | 2024 State MI to form a “thunder and lightning” duo on the block. I expected that and have viewed that duo many times. This was the first time I had seen Heyboer stand out. Gets a lot good looks off of the Grandville post attack. Shot the ball very well and confidently. Playing the three, has the vertical size to easily get his shot off against most defenders. However is more than just a standstill shooter. Good athlete who got to the basket off penetration.
Caleb Claerbaut Caleb Claerbaut 6'7" | C Zeeland East | 2026 State MI 6-7 2026 Zeeland East Younger brother of the literal “twin tower” duo currently at Ferris St. I mentioned earlier this week that 2024 standout Layne Risdon Layne Risdon 6'9" | C Zeeland East | 2024 State MI displayed excellent passing Sunday. Many of those post entry passes went to Claerbaut. Scored effectively in the post despite a very skinny frame. Showing off wiry strength in the process. Has a soft touch around the basket. That touch extends all the way out to beyond the arc. Has good ball skills already. At 6-7 is smack dab in the middle of the growth chart of his twin brothers (6-5 and 6-10) If he continues to grow this could be a special next level prospect. The skill level is already there. If he is done growing vertically he will still probably be fine. Especially if he adds weight to his frame.
