It’s never too early to start thinking about high school ball, and the fall is the perfect time to take into account our grassroots observations from the summer and determine who some of the best players in each conference are going to be. Back in the Charlotte metro area, we pick up with the South Piedmont 3A conference. With Central Cabarrus looking to repeat their perfect season, and a host of schools on the rise, we preview our preseason picks for the conference’s all-conference team below.
Last Season Stats – 13.6 PPG, 4.7 APG, 3.6 SPG
Daniel and his brother share many similarities, considering they’re twins, but both have their own abilities that make them shine. Chase is a gifted scorer that finishes around the hoop well and is very selective and efficient when he scores the ball. Also a plus plus outside shooting threat from deep where he tears defenses apart. On defense he’s great at matching up with bigger players and using his tenacity and toughness to make them uncomfortable.
Last Season Stats – 10.2 PPG, 6.7 APG, 3.6 SPG
Carson has the facilitating to Chase’s scoring for Central Cabarrus this year, as he’ll be entrusted to lead the point and run the CC offense. He’s talented with his vision and general unselfish attitude, always looking to make the next pass and set up his teammate as he showed during the AAU season. Defensively plays bigger than his size and is constantly looking to hustle and poke the ball away from you. These twins should have incredible senior seasons for CC.
Last Season Stats – N/A
Givens is a rising prospect out of Rowan County that should make noise within the conference this season. He’s got a scorers mentality, always looking to expose the defense and attack gaps/openings. He’s a knockdown shooter from range that makes defenses pay when they go under screens. He’s a high academic kid that will certainly garner college interest with the offensive skillset he is, but not before leading West Rowan this season.
Last Season Stats – N/A
Gonder is a super physical wing that should continue to lead his talented NW Cabarrus team this winter. He plays hard and with a high motor that allows him to constantly threaten defenses with his slashing and around the rim finishing ability. He’s almost an undersized high post or hybrid post player, as he likes to face up in the halfcourt and run the floor in transition. Can rebound well and defend the ball with ease. Still improving from distance but could easily become a 3 level threat if he does make a senior leap.
Last Season Stats – 12.4 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.3 BPG
Fresh off picking up his first Division 1 offer, Kent is gearing up to take Central Cabarrus towards a second state championship along with the Daniel twins this season. He’s a springy wing that offers enormous length even with a thin frame. His ability to make difficult shots in the mid-range and provide a dynamic threat from multiple levels of the floor keeps defenses off balance, especially when they scheme to take away his drives. Defensively he can play as a small ball forward and affect the rim with his length and toughness.
Last Season Stats – 9.8 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 1.3 BPG
Certainly the most physically intimidating presence in the conference, Howard is a double double threat every night. His sheer size and strength make him impossible to push all the way out of the post, and if he gets good position it’s over in terms of guarding him. He’s got a soft touch also around the rim, finishing layups and jump hooks. Rebounding is another strength, as his physicality allows him to move opponents out of the way and hoover up rebounds.
