A name I’ve seen highlights of before but never really gotten the chance to watch in person for a full game, Davis was really impressive on Saturday morning by impacting the game in a variety of ways. A long athlete from the wing position, defensively Davis did a good job making life difficult for opposing wings looking to attack and blocked a few shots at the rim. His athleticism and motor allow him to have a big defensive impact for his team. On the offensive end, Davis is starting to more consistently make jumpers off the catch and bounce and is a guy you can’t leave open from 3-point range. I’d say the biggest area of development for Davis will be with his ball handling, if he can tighten up his handle, it’ll allow him to more easily create space to shoot and beat closeouts from the wing. This would allow him to take the next step in his game. Columbus Academy is a sleeper in central Ohio this winter and Davis is one of their top prospects.
From Columbus Academy in Gahanna to a Gahanna High School product, the duo of Davis and Dillard have been impressive in the fall league. An undersized guard, Dillard hit a lot of shots off the bounce including back-to-back pull-up 3-pointers with under two minutes to play to cut the deficit from 6 to 3 and then 5 to 2 in crunch time. Able to change speeds quickly off the bounce and did a good job beating the first defender and kicking to a shooter. The best ball movement I saw all day featured Dillard’s team as they made six or seven passes in quick succession before finally finding Dillard for a wide open spot-up 3-pointer that he calmly knocked down. Gahanna has a lot of guard talent so it’ll be interesting to see who emerges for them this winter and takes control of the offense.
Was impressed with the slashing ability I saw from Brubaker on Saturday, he was getting downhill and finishing at the rim. Always wanting to go left, he would attack left and finish or go right and look to either crossover or spin back to his preferred left hand to finish. With his size and strength for a wing, Brubaker occasionally went right through smaller guards and finished. While a majority of his points came on drives, he also got a couple offensive rebound putbacks as well. Liked the motor I saw from Brubaker on Saturday!
A new transfer to Bishop Watterson, Johnson will look to bring his offensive abilities at the point guard position to add a boost to the Eagles offense. With a soft touch on pull-up jumpers, Johnson can get to his spots and score efficiently. As a distributor, Johnson makes quick decisions and had numerous skip passes to shooters. In the final game of the day, I’d guess Johnson had the most assists out of any player I watched on Saturday morning. A talented lead guard, look for Johnson to make a name for himself in the CCL this season.
