Out of all the top performers at the event, I narrowed it down to five of the most impactful players for their teams at the showcase. Here are the top five performers from Saturday.
McClure was able to get to his spots and create all afternoon and through the evening. And although he was off and on with his finishing early in the day, he came alive and took over later in the showcase. His playmaking ability was evident throughout the event, using his quickness to consistently get penetration and shift the focus of the defense. Later on, he showed that alpha mentality and took the ball to the rack himself time and again in crunch time.
Thomas is a strong guard who has the footwork and range of finishing moves to be a real problem at the hoop. He counts on getting that first step and then keeping that edge on his defender all the way to the hoop. Part of that first step success is reliant on the threat of his 3-point shooting. His offensive skillset was on full display Saturday, setting up his drives with consistent shooting from outside and keeping defenders guessing all day long.
Singleton came on strong and kept his day rolling with effective two-way play. He was a force at the rim early on, simply working to get into good spots where he could affect the game under the hoop. Once he got going down low, he started getting out in transition to get some big finishes above the rim, then he started showing some ability to attack off of a couple dribbles and get inside, and at that point there was no stopping him. He’s not a guy that needs the ball to be effective but did a great job putting himself in spots to be successful and was extremely strong with his attempts.
Highlights
It looked pretty easy at times for Kaupanger. He had an edge athletically on the majority of the crowd at the showcase, but he also had the offensive balance in his game to keep defenders off-balance and find success from every level. He was really mixing up his attacks well and was patient with pumps and jabs, working to get defenders out of position so he could attack. He also showed some great effort defensively and had a few highlight blocks in the paint.
Luz is just tough. He’s not the biggest, not the fastest, or most athletic. He isn’t super long or rangy, but he has an extremely high IQ and attention to detail. He showed off an all-around skillset as a scorer, attacking defenders with angles, initiating contact to create space for his shot inside, and showing the footwork and focus to hit tough shots from the outside. It takes a lot to throw off his shot and he was one of the more efficient players on the afternoon.
