Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
Kaupanger is capable of doing great things on the offensive end, but he’s also been a hungry defender to start the year, especially in their game against Rainier Beach. He had three steals and two blocks in that game and really looked to make an impact around the rim with his leaping ability. He has the mentality to challenge anyone at the rim and his defensive spirit will play big for the Gators the rest of the way.

The star guard created quite the buzz this summer and it has culminated in his recent commitment to Indiana State. The senior guard is looking to avenge a 1A title game loss last season and also has a good shot at being named 1A Player of the Year. The 6’5 athlete is a difference-maker on both sides of the floor and can take over games with his perimeter scoring and toughness at the rim.

He’s an exceptional athlete who was pretty consistently able to get to the rim and finish. And while he was ultra-aggressive attacking gaps, he also showed off some solid range from deep with some pull-ups in transition and made several nice outlets up the court to hit deep runners. Was equally aggressive on the defensive end, shooting passing lanes, keeping his hands active inside, and moving his feet well to cut off drives from the help side.

Martin was one of the most fun players to watch live over the weekend. He can score from all 3 levels with ease, sinking shot with no problem. Kaupanger brings energy to the court, playing with an edge that no other player has. He supports his teammates and never has bad energy on the court. He defended at a high level all day, guarding some of the top talent in WA. Martin recently committed to Division 1 program, Indiana State University.

Kaupanger has been a hot name this spring with his play on the PRO16 circuit. He made a lot of improvements heading into the last high school season and has continued to skyrocket through the spring. He’s made countless above-the-rim finishes, is shooting the 3 at a high clip, and has elevated his “takeover” gene, showing he can get a bucket when he needs to and from any spot on the court.

Martin just keeps getting better and better every single time I see him on the court. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and provides so much energy for his team. His athleticism surprises a lot of people as he can EASILY rise above defenders to put them on the wrong side of a poster dunk. His defensive game is elite as he can guard a variety of positions and moves his feet very well. He is physical in the paint and holds his own nicely against top talent. He is a Division 1 talent if you ask me.

Martin is already top 10 ranked in his class and has continuously shown growth in his game throughout the years. He keeps finding ways to elevate himself over everyone else, having such a well rounded game. He is a 6’5″ wing who gets the job done on both sides of the ball, being able to guard all positions too. Kaupanger is playing with World Class Renegades this summer and had a phenomenal weekend, dropping 47 points then 28 points the next game while playing against top talent in the country.

Martin’s game has been evolving in such a big way each and every year. Over the off-season he made his game more well rounded by elevating his perimeter game and becoming more athletic. He’s a 6’6″ wing who scores at all 3 levels at a high level and is a big time difference maker for his squad. Annie Wright is a great team with a ton of talent, but if Kaupanger struggles to hit shots, I’m not sure how deep they will go.
