The shifty 6-foot point guard best known as “Fuzzy” knows there’s still plenty of work to be done, and has spent this off-season in the gym honing his skills. Montague is coming off a good initial freshman campaign but is ready for bigger and better things ahead.
“It was honestly a lot of pressure put on me, but just trying to play through that pressure, playing with my team, it was just great to do and great
to feel the experience going on to the next year,” Montague said. “I feel like through freshman year, I’ve seen that I’ve got to build my confidence up, and that’s the only way I’m going to get better. Confidence, playing with my team all the way and trusting them like I should.”
Montague was pretty much a starter from day one with the Demos and had the opportunity to play both on and off the basketball, averaging 12.1 points as the second-leading scorer on the team. After the season ended, he changed uniforms and joined the NW Rotary Rebels as the only member of the elite AAU squad from Oregon.
“I’ve loved the experience, just doing it in general, just playing on the EYBL circuit and just getting better through the offseason without the
team and with the team as well,” Montague said. “I’m trying to get better at my consistency and my shot and my vision and IQ – always my IQ.”
It’s still very early for Montague when it comes to his college recruitment but he’s already gotten some interest. In fact, the rising sophomore already has his first scholarship offer as he’s received one from the University of Portland.
“It’s great to be around, it’s just my hometown,” Montague said. “But in general with school, I’m looking for education and not just having fun, as I’m trying to work. I’m just trying to be in the gym 24/7 like I should be – I don’t like doing nothing else.”
Now that summer ball has wrapped up, Montague shifts his focus to the 2023-24 season where he’ll be counted upon even more with the Jefferson Democrats. “I’m just ready to play with my new team,” Montague said. “It will be a little bit of a change with the seniors that left, but we’ve still got a core, and that’s all we need. I’m just happy to be here.”
Montague currently ranks as the #1 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2026 rankings.
