The Licking County League player of the year, Mallernee makes a deserved debut in our rankings. A skilled wing guard with good positional size, Mallernee can really shoot it from off the ball. Able to show some more self-creation and ball handling with his high school team, Mallernee is a wing with his grassroots program Ohio United that more closely resembles the role he’ll play at the next level. I expect a ton of small college programs will take interest in Mallernee sooner rather than later.
Another new name who came onto the scene in May playing at the grassroots level, I really liked what I saw from Braddix with Queen City Prophets . Princeton graduated a couple of veteran guards and lost another to transfer, opening up minutes for Braddix to slide in this winter. I think he’ll take this opportunity and run with it as he’s got good size for a wing guard and makes his teammates better with his playmaking ability. Braddix shot 40% from 3-point range as a Junior and should have considerably more volume this season, expect small college programs to be interested in Braddix.
Nieves is an athletic wing who has the opportunity to breakout in the OCC on a Thomas Worthington squad that graduated a lot of their top talent. Playing with Midwest Basketball Club Mills this spring, Nieves has taken a step with his consistency game to game, scoring in transition and making an impact athletically. Continuing to develop his perimeter shot is going to be a key for Nieves as he’s got the athleticism and motor to play right away at the small college level, watch out for Nieves this winter in central Ohio.
The leading scorer for McNicholas as a Junior, Ehlers was just a shade under 12 PPG last winter. An impressive spot-up shooter in the corner, Ehlers connected on 25 3-pointers last season and is more consistent during the grassroots season with Shining Star Price next to other talented teammates. Ehlers had flashes with eight games of 15+ points last season, expect that number to be over half of McNicholas’ games for Ehlers as a senior.
Haywood is an impressive athlete who is an intriguing two-way wing for small college programs. Strong and athletic, Haywood plays bigger than his listed height in the paint and is tough to move around. Offensively, he’s best in transition when he’s able to attack the rim and cut to the basket. After being named to the all OCC team last season, expect even more honors to come Haywood’s way as a senior.
Highlights
Davis has been a standout on the Prep Hoops Circuit this spring with Rice Basketball Academy that has a group of NW Ohio and Michigan prospects that have caught my eye. Davis is a wing who can make plays for others and is an impressive athlete in the open court. With his production on the grassroots level, Davis has an opportunity to breakout in the Toledo area as a senior during the winter. Another prospect for small college programs to check out this summer.
