With a very full day of basketball taking place on Saturday in Winston-Salem, let’s check out three of the most interesting matchups at the NCISAA showcase. While not all the best teams in the private school ranks, there are a lot of intriguing groups building up to make a run and be successful in the upcoming season.
Charlotte Latin vs. Asheville School
These are two squads that will be retooling this season but still have intriguing players that are worth watching. Nic Levy has done well for Team Charlotte this AAU season as a 6’6 wing that can break matchups with his frame, and James Jones is a 2025 that plays strong defense and will be an emotional leader for the group. 2027 Alex Dauska Alex Dauska 6'2" | SG Charlotte Latin | 2027 NC will be a breakout name to keep an eye on as well, playing up in grassroots play and looking to make an impact as a rising freshman guard on varsity. For the Blues in Asheville, stretch forward Ryan Soulis Ryan Soulis 6'10" | C Asheville School | 2024 NC will be back to anchor this group, and should be joined by 2025 Cedric Kenan Cedric Kenan 6'2" | PG Asheville School | 2025 State NC , a rapidly improving lead guard that should get a chance to show what he can do this year. Brady Donlon will join Soulis in the frontcourt to provide extra size and length, but there will be lots of opportunities for new guys to contribute and prove their value with new coach Trent McAllister. This should be a tight, competitive battle on Saturday.
Caldwell vs. Trinity Academy (Raleigh)
Two sneaky good groups clash in the afternoon, with Caldwell having a lot of solid young pieces to check out. Ayden Johnson Ayden Johnson 5'10" | PG Caldwell Academy | 2026 State NC leads the group from the lead guard spot, with his improvement happening week by week this spring and summer. James Swindell III James Swindell III 6'3" | SF Caldwell Academy | 2024 State NC will provide the veteran scoring role this group needs, and Jaylen Cross Jaylen Cross 6'4" | SG Caldwell Academy | 2025 State #168 Nation NC should really hold it down on the interior as a ferocious rebounder and scorer. 2024 6’11 Ahmed Jawo and 2027 6’3 Seth Harris Seth Harris 6'3" | SG Caldwell Academy | 2027 NC are new additions that should solidify guard and interior depth for the squad. The Tigers of Trinity Academy lose a lot of guys but add one of my favorite 2025s, Evan Dean Evan Dean 6'6" | SG Millbrook | 2025 State NC , to their rotation. He should immediately become a key piece in the rotation with his 6’7 frame and real scoring ability at all three levels. Parker Bye Parker Bye 6'3" | SG Trinity Academy | 2025 State NC returns to be the teams deadeye shooter and probably handle the ball more in the offense. There’s a lot of minutes available and talent to replace for them, so I’ll be eager to watch who emerges over the course of the weekend for them.
Grace Christian vs. Gaston Day
This is a good nightcap to end the day off with two solid squads. Grace Christian will be led by Quasim Oden Quasim Oden 6'1" | PG GRACE Christian | 2024 State NC this year at the point guard spot, and Steven McLeod Steven McLeod 6'2" | CG GRACE Christian | 2024 State NC will chip in as well as a solid scorer and playmaker. Michael Phillips Michael Phillips 6'4" | SG Grace Christian | 2026 State NC will be a 2026 to watch for this group as well. For Gaston Day, a big transitional year is incoming but they still have veteran talent like 2024s Chase Owens and Kurt Hunter. In the 2026 class, Griffen Simpson is coming along nicely and Braylen Todd should become a good connector and facilitator within this group. These two groups are ones I know less about, but ones I want to get an eye on before the live period is over in order to track these names through the live period and during the school year.
