The shifty 6-foot-2 guard was a shoo-in for the squad after an incredible senior season that included leading Tualatin to a repeat 6A championship. Sorting out his college future will be upcoming in the next few months but for now, he’s excited about playing in the all-star game alongside the guys he competed against this past year.
“All these guys are college players and I love competing against these guys and playing with these guys every day and we get along too,” Lake said. “All of us respect each other, respect our games so it’s fun to play on a team like this.”
Just a couple of weeks ago, Lake led the charge for the Timberwolves as they captured the school’s second state title in a row. Unlike last year, Tualatin wasn’t considered a favorite to win it all so the upset victory over #1 ranked West Linn was that much sweeter.
“It’s definitely starting to set in a little bit,” Lake said. “You get to walk around school, people congratulating you, always feels good, but I don’t know – I don’t have any words for it. It’s a good feeling, for sure.”
Individually Lake was nothing short of spectacular, averaging 25.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. Not only was he great shooting the ball but was unstoppable getting to the hoop – and getting to the line, where he led 6A in free throws made (218) and attempted (261). It was a great year of growth for him in all phases of the game.
“I feel good about it,” Lake said. “I mean, I think looking back, I have some things to work on, but I think I showed a lot of good leadership and stuff with my team, especially because we had guys that were young or not as experienced as I was. So I got to lead by example in the state (tournament) and in the playoffs.”
After WAVOR the Game, Lake will focus on his college recruitment, which stands to heat up after the repeat championship. He went into state holding offers from Division II Regis and NJCAA power Eastern Arizona, and Colby JC from Kansas recently jumped on board as well.
“Right now I’m not going to make a decision probably for a little bit longer – I’m kind of just staying patient,” Lake said. “I’m going to play a couple of spring tournaments, so after that, I’ll probably decide. But right now I’m just staying patient, not going to commit to anything. I’m hoping to go on a couple of visits soon, but I got to get that scheduled and stuff.”
Lake elaborated more on Eastern Arizona and Regis (Colby offered after this initial interview took place). “Eastern Arizona, I like their coaching staff and I know (former teammate) Noah (Ogoli), so it also makes it good,” Lake said. “Regis, I want to know more about them. I want to go down there and visit the school. I love what I hear about them, too.”
Overall, Lake is keeping all options open and is all ears to anyone who wants to come into the picture. “I’m not picky,” Lake said. “I know that opportunities can come late, so I’m just staying open – you never know what can happen.”
Lake currently ranks as the #8 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2023 rankings.
