We tried to way all these things in deciding and it was still tough. Regardless, here is the Prep Hoops Player of the Year and the Honorable Mentions from the freshman class this season.
On a side note, just wait till you see how the talent stacks up in our soon to be released 2026 prospect rankings!
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Eklund is going to be a matchup nightmare for coaches for the next 3 years. His length and ball skill combination allowed him to put up some huge numbers.
Frantz sent a huge message at the Prep Hoops Freshman Showcase in the fall and never let off the gas from there. He played with a very high basketball IQ and excelled as a decision maker for his team.
Huckeby is very talented and didn’t look like a freshman with his game. He seemed to get better and better as the season rolled along, which isn’t a great sign for future opponents.
Alex has some big shoes to fill with his brother Tyler having just won the 2023 Mr. Basketball award. Guess what? Alex showed this year that he has his own game and that he will fit those shoes just fine.
Sanderson made a huge statement this year. I saw him play a lot and I have no hesitation in saying that he’s a high major talent and one of the best in the state. Sanderson is a flat out program player.
Sigmon made a statement similar to Sanderson’s. He just very talented. I really like his versatility, feel for the game and ability to finish in a variety of ways and with both hands.
Stennis can put up some huge numbers. It’s like he’s shot out of a cannon when he gets going in transition and he’s an elite finisher at the rim.
Summerville has that “it factor” and he backs up. He can manipulate defenders with his handles and has volleyball line type of range on his jumper.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Let me start by saying that if you choose any of the above players (or probably 15 others) I wouldn’t tell you that you’re wrong. I went with Sadler because, as a freshman, he had a huge influence on whether his team went home with a state title. It’s not an easy task for a freshman to step his game up on a stage like that. But that’s the thing, Sadlerr isn’t your average freshman. He’s been on big stages before and it showed. Sadler is probably one of the most gifted pure athletes in the state, regardless of class and regardless of sport. He has big things on the horizon.
