City Section used to dominate the high school basketball landscape back in the day and while more emphasis has been placed on Southern Section in recent years, there is still talent in City Section to watch. Here’s a look at some additional City Section point guards to keep an eye on as the playoffs get underway this week.
1. Jaden Depina – Taft 2024
Depina is a bit of a combo guard who can score the basketball as well as be a playmaker. Solid handles and can hit defenders with crossovers to get to his spots on the court. He pushes the ball well in transition and is quick off the dribble. Consistent shooter from three-point range and can pull-up and shoot off the dribble. Able to get into the lane consistently and can finish at the basket. Good defensive guard on ball using his quick hands to poke the ball free.
2. King Peterson – Crenshaw 2024
Peterson is capable of playing both guard positions despite his size and he does it well playing alongside another ball-handler in AJ Robinson. If need be, he can be the primary ball-handler and run the team’s offense and he can also play well off-ball and look for scoring opportunities. He pushes the ball in transition and is able to finish at the basket against bigger/taller defenders. Consistent catch and shoot three-point shooter. A solid on-ball defender who slides his feet well and keeps the ball-handler in front of him. Comes up with steals and loose balls.
3. Alijah Arenas – Chatsworth 2026
Arenas is in the mold of a big point guard who can play multiple positions. A crafty ball-handler who can read the defense well and get to his spots on the court. He is explosive and can put up points in a hurry. Consistently attacks off the dribble and is a crafty finisher at the basket. Also able to face up and shoot the jumper from midrange or from three-point range. Can pull-up and shoot in transition. Has the tools/size to be a good defensive player and is already a decent shot blocker for a guard.
4. Anthony Hrboka – San Pedro 2023
Hrboka is another combo guard who is comfortable looking for his shot and being a scoring threat or being a facilitator and setting teammates up with scoring opportunities. Definitely a pass-first guard though who keeps the ball moving in the halfcourt. Can attack with baseline drives and kick the ball out to the open shooters. Handles the ball well and keeps composure against defensive pressure. Consistent three-point shot of catch and shoot.
