Rob’s Class 2A Postseason Recap 2-26-23

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Class 2A decided its state tournament representation Saturday night around Iowa. The event was scheduled for the week of March 6 in Des Moines.

Here’s a look at who made it through in 2A:

SUBSTATE 1 CHAMPION – WESTERN CHRISTIAN

Fifth-ranked Western Christian (20-3) edged No. 10 West Lyon (18-5), 67-66, Saturday night at MOC-Floyd Valley on a game-winning shot by Kaden Van Regenmorter Kaden Van Regenmorter 6'3" | SF Hull, Western Christian | 2025 State IA . Tate Van Regenmorter Tate Van Regenmorter 6'5" | PF Western Christian | 2023 State IA has paced the Wolfpack this season with 14.9 points and 5.3 rebounds. Kaden Van Regenmorter Kaden Van Regenmorter 6'3" | SF Hull, Western Christian | 2025 State IA has averaged 12.6 points and 5.3 boards.

SUBSTATE 2 CHAMPION – KUEMPER CATHOLIC

Unranked Kuemper Catholic also clinched a state tournament berth with a nail-biting win Saturday night. The Knights (18-6) slipped by No. 4 Sioux Central (23-1), 69-67, at East Sac County.

Carson Kanne Carson Kanne 5'9" | PG Kuemper Catholic | 2025 State IA came up big for Kuemper, scoring 18 points, grabbing six rebounds and handing out three assists. Jacob Hargens Jacob Hargens 6'2" | PG Sioux Central | 2023 State IA scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Rebels.

SUBSTATE 3 CHAMPION – ROLAND-STORY

Second-ranked Roland-Story (24-1) pulled out a 55-51 triumph against Hudson (18-7) Saturday night at Marshalltown. The Norsemen ran their winning streak to 14 games.

Jonovan Wilkinson Jonovan Wilkinson 6'2" | SF Roland-Story | 2024 State IA and Boaz Clark Boaz Clark 6'3" | PG Roland-Story | 2024 State IA scored 15 points apiece for Roland-Story, while Luke Patton Luke Patton 6'5" | PF Roland-Story | 2023 State IA added 12. Camden Davis Camden Davis 6'5" | SF Hudson | 2024 State IA led Hudson with 14 points, while Culin Ugrin and Drew Hansen each added 10 points for the Pirates.

SUBSTATE 4 CHAMPION – MFL MARMAC

Unrated MFL MarMac (24-1) took down No. 8 Lake Mills (23-1), 57-48, Saturday night at Charles City.

Sophomore Zach Driscoll Zach Driscoll 6'1" | SG Decorah | 2025 State IA (20.4 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 5.0 APG) and junior Carver Blietz-Bentien (13.9 PPG, 8.0 RPG) have led MFL MarMac this season. Denton Kingland Denton Kingland 6'0" | SG Lake Mills | 2023 State IA (15 points), Lance Helming Lance Helming 6'5" | PF Lake Mills | 2024 State IA (12) and Aiden Stensrud Aiden Stensrud 6'5" | SF Lake Mills | 2025 State IA (10) reached double figures in scoring for the Bulldogs Saturday.

SUBSTATE 5 CHAMPION – MONTICELLO

Unranked Monticello (17-6) pulled off a 56-53 upset win against No. 3 Aplington-Parkersburg (21-3) Saturday night at Dike-New Hartford. Iowa Football recruit Preston Ries Preston Ries 6'1" | SF Monticello | 2024 State IA , a junior, paced the Panthers with 19 points, notching 12 of those marks in the decisive fourth quarter. Jack Lambert and Tate Petersen Tate Petersen 6'1" | PG Monticello | 2023 State IA each added 11 points for the winners with teammate Conley Schauf Conley Schauf 6'1" | SF Monticello | 2026 State IA contributing 10.

Garrett Hempen Garrett Hempen 6'1" | PG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2023 State IA scored 18 for the Falcons, who also received 16 from Gavin Thomas Gavin Thomas 6'0" | SG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2024 State IA .

SUBSTATE 6 CHAMPION – PELLA CHRISTIAN

In another tight contest Saturday night, unrated Pella Christian (14-9) took down No. 6 West Burlington (22-2), 54-53, at Oskaloosa. Aiden Stoltz Aiden Stoltz 6'0" | SG Pella Christian | 2023 State IA scored 18 points for the winners. The Eagles reach the state tournament for the 17th time in school history.

SUBSTATE 7 CHAMPION – DES MOINES CHRISTIAN

Unranked Des Moines Christian (18-6) upset seventh-rated AHSTW (21-3), 47-36, Saturday night at ADM. Tate Platte Tate Platte 6'0" | SF Des Moines Christian | 2024 State IA scored 18 points and Carsen Thies added 14 for the winners. Kyle Sternberg Kyle Sternberg 6'4" | SG AHSTW | 2023 State IA notched 15 for the Vikings, which fell one game short of the state tournament for a second year in a row.

SUBSTATE 8 CHAMPION – CENTRAL LYON

No. 1 Central Lyon (20-1) eased by Treynor (17-6), 82-57, Saturday night at Council Bluffs Lincoln. Iowa Football recruit Zach Lutmer Zach Lutmer 6'1" | PG Central Lyon | 2023 IA poured in 24 points, snagged four rebounds and swiped a pair of steals for the winners. Andrew Austin Andrew Austin 6'6" | PF Central Lyon | 2023 State IA added 20 points and seven rebounds, and Reece Vander Zee Reece Vander Zee 6'5" | SF Central Lyon | 2024 State IA chipped in 18 points and 12 boards for the Lions.
