The second round of the NCHSAA 2A State Playoffs took place on Thursday night as the South Granville Vikings hosted the Manteo Redskins. Take a look at the recap/standouts from an exciting game that went back and forth.
The Manteo Redskins didn’t waste any time getting their offense going and it looked like they would run away with things in the early going. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the home team before Oliver Roberts Oliver Roberts 6'3" | CG South Granville | 2024 State NC cracked the seal with a 3-pointer to start the scoring. The rim presence of Kaleb Spencer Kaleb Spencer 6'9" | PF First Flight | 2024 State NC played an early role in the Vikings’ scoring woes. The Redskins would ride the early offense of Spencer and senior shooting guard Will Waughtel Will Waughtel 6'1" | CG Manteo | 2023 NC as he knocked down four 3-pointers in the opening quarter and led 22-13 after one quarter.
South Granville would come out in the second quarter and keep things close, but Spencer really started to find his stride in the second quarter. He put up eight of their 12 second-quarter points while South Granville would win the scoring battle overall, scoring 14 points as a team behind two 3-pointers from KJ Green KJ Green 6'1" | CG Granville Central | 2023 State NC . Manteo held a 34-27 lead at the half, but the Vikings would come out in the third quarter as a completely different squad.
The Vikings would come out firing in the third quarter led by the efforts of junior guard Pierce Pettit Pierce Pettit 6'4" | SG South Granville | 2024 State NC . From there, they would take complete control, closing the final 2:16 of the quarter on 13-2 run. The Vikings outscored the Redskins 25-9 in the third quarter and it didn’t help Spencer went down with a knee injury after a blocked shot and didn’t return. After 3, South Granville led 52-43.

Spencer had himself quite the game up until he left the game due to injury midway through the third quarter. He finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks, showing off his ability to protect the rim and be a presence in the paint offensively. He’s a 2024 prospect with good upside to keep track of given his motor/energy.
Highlights
Roberts did well to keep control of the team when things were looking bleak in the early going. By the end, he was leading by example and finished with 17 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to ensure his team sealed the victory. He continues to excel in the backcourt and show off his improvements in the 2024 class with the Vikings.
Highlights
Pettit was impressive in sparking the Vikings third quarter run. He posted 12 of his 20 points in the third quarter, showing off his ability to knock down shots on the perimeter and off the bounce. He’s a name to keep eyes on with his ability to operate on the perimeter.
Green was impressive with his ability to score and find others in space. He did well to turn things up on the defensive side of the ball and in turn, sparked a run himself with his ability to knock down shots and finish around the rim. He’s an unsigned senior that continues to show he can make an impact.
It looked like Manteo would run away with this one early thanks to the efforts of Waughtel. He knocked down four 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with five for the game to pace the Manteo backcourt. They ran out of steam down the stretch, but he certainly played a tough brand of basketball on both ends.
