City Section used to dominate the high school basketball landscape back in the day and while more emphasis has been placed on Southern Section in recent years, there is still talent in City Section to watch. Here’s a look at some of the City Section wings to keep an eye on as the playoffs get underway this week.
1. Javon Davis – LA Jordan 2023
Davis should be considered one of the top wing scorers in City Section. He’s comfortable with the ball in his hands and he can create his own shot in the halfcourt. Consistently able to attack off the dribble and he can get to the rim and finish or he can pull-up and shoot the midrange jumper. Good shot from three-point range and can consistently knock them down off the catch. Good coming off screens and being able to shoot if the defenders goes under the screen. Handles the ball in transition and can push the pace well.
2. Donald Thompson – King/Drew 2024
Thompson is another one of City Section’s top wing scorers. Each time I’ve seen him play he is more and more comfortable with handling the ball and being a primary shot creator. He has a solid shot and is able to shoot off the dribble either with pull-ups or step-backs. Good shooter from three-point range and able to face-up and shoot. His strength though lies in his ability to attack off the dribble. He consistently gets into the lane and finishes well at the basket. Good step-through moves.
3.
Tyler Hunt

Hunt has been one of the top City Section players for a while now. There are a couple of things that always stand out to me about Hunt. One is his rebounding ability. He’s a good rebounding guard who mixes it up with bigger players. The other is his defense. He is a solid on-ball defender with good instincts but I’ve also seen him able to body up bigger players that try to post him up. Offensively, his strength is in his slashing game. Good ball-handler who consistently gets to the basket and can finish through traffic. Comfortable creating his own shot.

A New Mexico State commit, Carr is a combo guard who is capable of playing either point guard or shooting guard. He’s a big wing with good handles and is strong and explosive in transition. Consistently able to attack off the dribble and finish at the basket. Sees the court well and is able to find the open teammate in the halfcourt. He has consistent range out to the three-point line and knock down jumpers off the dribble.
5. Nathan Ibarra – South East 2023
Ibarra is also a bit of a combo guard. He has the size and scoring ability to play the two but he also has the ball-handling and playmaking ability to play the one. He knows how to break a press and he does a good job consistently attacking the middle. He can see over the defense with his height and he can find cutters at the basket. Good rebounder despite his slender build. Does well in transition as the ball-handler starting the break off his own rebounds and finding teammates filling the lanes.
