City Section used to dominate the high school basketball landscape back in the day and while more emphasis has been placed on Southern Section in recent years, there is still talent in City Section to watch. Here’s a look at some additional City Section wings to keep an eye on as the playoffs get underway this week.
1. Ryan Ramsey – Manual Arts 2023
Ramsey is a very good wing scorer. Comfortable with the ball in his hands and being a primary ball-handler. He has good scoring instincts, good handles and is able to get to his spots on the court. Able to create space to get his shot off. Good halfcourt scorer able to knock down the pull-up jumper off the dribble. Also able to put the ball on the floor and finish at the basket. He’s capable of being a solid playmaker too finding open teammates in the halfcourt.
2. Donovan Cornelius – LACES 2024
Cornelius has the tools to be a good wing scorer. He can shoot off the dribble and he can get past his defender and attack the basket consistently. Able to draw contact at the rim and get himself to the free-throw line. Finishes strong through contact. Comfortable with the ball in his hands and being able to initiate the offense. Good use of fakes on his jumpers. Consistent shot from three-point range. He can act as a playmaker too and makes good passes/decisions in the halfcourt.
3. Dashaun Maron-Gaines – Grant 2023
Maron-Gaines is a slight/slender wing but he doesn’t have any issue getting his shot off and going against bigger defenders. He does well getting to his spots on the court off the dribble. Comfortable attacking off the dribble and being able to get to the basket consistently. Good job of drawing contact and getting to the free-throw line and finishes well at the rim. Good activity on the glass being able to position himself well and use his length to grab rebounds over taller/bigger players.
4. Caleb Newton – Birmingham 2026
Newton is a young wing with plenty of upside. His talent/skill is apparent and he has good instincts for a young player. He plays off the bench but throughout the season he has been trusted to close games and isn’t afraid of making big plays in crunch time. He has good handles and he is able to bring the ball up court. Good activity on the glass, especially on the defensive end boxing out and being able to start the break with good outlet passes. Consistent range out to the three-point line.

– Taft 2023
Brooks is a capable scorer but what I do like about his game his defense. He is a solid on ball defender who stays in front of the ball-handler and forces them to pick up their dribble. Does a good job recovering if beat off the dribble. Scoring-wise, he can shoot well from three-point range and is able to shoot the transition jumper. Finishes through contact at the basket and can draw fouls and get to the free-throw line. Comfortable in ISO situations getting his shot off. He can be a playmaker too and does well kicking the ball back out on drives.
