Looking to control their own destiny still, the Trabuco Hills Mustangs continue league play at home against the San Clemente Tritons. Slow start to the game with a low-scoring first quarter with a 12-8 Mustangs lead. Jack Warnick and Matt Mowers carried the load on offense through the course of the game. Mowers is the non-traditional big man with guard skills and Warnick being the quick-slashing wing. Sam Meza-Tallada is currently coming off the bench for the Mustangs but he brings a dose of just about everything from both ends of the floor. Looking for potential players for the next level, Sam is someone that I would want on my team.
On the Tritons roster, Christian Fernandez is who caught my eye. With his decent size, he brings a fiery passion that I did not see from anyone else on the roster. He brings the best out of his teammates but also is able to take over on any given possession with a nasty pull-up or step-back jumper. He is only a sophomore so watch for his game to blossom.
Going into halftime Trabuco Hills seems to be controlling the game but only holds a four-point lead. Getting back to the bulk of the Trabuco roster with Mowers being the center of it. As the focal point, he draws so much attention and does whatever the team needs. Tonight it was hitting a flurry of threes and being the de facto point guard as a center. On other nights it can be bully ball on the block or dishing it out to three-point shooters and cutters to the basket. The other guy I wanted to focus back on is Warnick. He has the perfect build for that wing play. Gets after it on the defensive end with active blocks and steals. Also one of the best finishers I’ve seen this season at the rim.
Holding a close win throughout the entire night, the Mustangs went on to defeat the Tritons 48-37. Jack Warnick led Trabuco Hills with 20 points, 4 rebounds, and a block and a steal each. Matt Mowers followed with 16 points, 7 rebounds, an assist, and a block.
