I was impressed by Darius. At his age, his ability to maintain his composure under pressure was refreshing to see. It’s not often I see that type of poise from a freshman, especially in an intense varsity game. He was fearless, too. Although he was the smallest player on the floor, he attacked the rim with confidence. He even converted a tough contested layup with his weak hand in crunch time. His decision-making was solid all night as well. He took care of the ball, he initiated the offense, and he understood the tempo of the game which are all three qualities you want in a floor general. Darius is definitely a guard to keep an eye on in the class of 2026.
2025 TraMayne Jenkins 6’1 F, RA Long Lumberjacks
Tra is the type of player every coach would want on their team. A bit undersized for the 4-position but he battles so hard that it makes up for the lack of size. What he does may not show up in box scores but it definitely impacts winning. He had 4 charges in the game I watched, two coming at crucial moments in the game that deflated the opposing team. He’s a player that understands his role and stars in it; he doesn’t do anything outside of his wheelhouse. He isn’t bad offensively either. He didn’t take many shots but he converted on the majority that he took.
2023 Elliot Ball-Dowling 6’7 C, De La Salle North Catholic Knights
Elliot was a force inside the game I watched. The defense tried every post coverage they could, but Elliot still managed to seal for good position. And when he had his defender sealed, he demanded the ball for the whole gym to hear which I loved. In an era where it is all about pace and space, it was nice to see a traditional big demanding the ball inside. I think his best skill might have been his passing. Due to his damage inside, the defense started to double him. He made some nice no-look dishes to his teammates.

I liked Josiah’s skillset. He could do a bit of everything— handle the ball and attack the cup, create his own shot from the midrange, and although I didn’t see him make any, his shot was smooth from 3. He played at his own pace even with defenders being ultra-physical with him. It was almost like he was moving in slow motion out there at times. Defenders had a hard time keeping him from getting to the rim.

Brown has become a real knockdown threat from deep. Not only is he knocking them down, but he is shooting them with deep range too. In the game I watched, he had three 3s in the first half. Defensively, he was solid all night as well. He kept his guy in front and used his long arms to be disruptive. I’d like to see him be a bit more aggressive offensively. As defenses continue to load up on his star teammate, Brown will continue to get opportunities to attack. As a former hooper, I understand there’s always an adjustment period when stepping into a larger role. The bright side for the Lumberjacks is that his game has developed nicely since last season so hopefully by playoff time he’s comfortable in his new role and is consistently the 2nd option for his squad.
