The Sierra kids foundation provides educational scholarships to children and youth with developmental disabilities in Northern Nevada, specifically kids with autism spectrum disorder. The Sierra kids foundation helps families who are under insured, low-income, unemployed, or of low socioeconomic status pay for ABA therapy for their child who may not be able to afford a treatment program otherwise. This year’s event featured a Reno vs Northern California format, pitting schools from each area against each other. In this article, we take a look at some of the top performers from Day 1.
Covera is a deceptively quick pg with a strong handle. The floor general displayed magician like ability to find and then deliver to teammates. It was not uncommon to see him thread the most crowded lanes with pinpoint passes. Really liked the pace and quickness he played with.
Nathan Schnell
Nathan Schnell
Schnell was injured early during last years tournament so I didn’t get to see much of him. Glad I got to see him today because he really impressed. The big man has soft hands along with good feet. He scored around the bucket using a series of combination post moves, and showed that he has the ability to rebound the ball at a high level.
EJ Groves
EJ Groves
Groves is an unders-overs type guy. He got the majority of his buckets off straight energy and effort, crashing the offensive glass for put backs and 2nd chance opportunities for his team. I thought his willingness to run the floor and finish was a crucial aspect of helping his Vacaville squad to a victory.
Tolbert is a powerful post with huge hands and a strong frame. He dillengently ran the floor, and showed good hands catching and finishing around the rim. I wouldn’t label him as explosive but he finished above the rim with dunks on more than one occasion.
Reid is going to earn himself a spot on my all tough guy teams this season. He has a strong frame, but it’s more than just his physical precense, he’s a big time competitor that won every 50/50 ball on the evening, helping his Tigers squad to a terrific comeback victory.
Thacker showed up big in the clutch for his squad. The PG is a future prospect to keep an eye on as he has a few skills that will at the very least translate to a productive varsity career. He didn’t shoot it particulary well, but he has nice form, and his abilty to get into the lane and score was key for his team.
Basabas was almost like Coreva light, he played with the same shifty ability as his teammate, weaving through defenders on the way to the basket. His passing was also stellar as the PG was able to distribute to teammtes at will.
Reid was one of the best rebounders I saw on the day. The big man has a good combination of athleticism, determination and size that allowed him to grab both in traffic, and out of area boards. He also was good catching and finishing around the rim, showing decent hands and skill.
