Continue ReadingThe season has started and from Thursday on through the weekend we had the opportunity to attend a number of games around the Portland area. Here’s a look at the top performers from the games we attended on Saturday at the final day of the Bill Gabel Invitational – Tigard over Sunset in the consolation game and then Sherwood over David Douglas in the title matchup.
Breyan Kelly Breyan Kelly 6'2" | CG Sherwood | 2023 State OR (2023 Sherwood)
Big weekend for Kelly at the Bill Gabel Invitational as he first lit up the scoreboard with six threes and 31 points on Friday and he followed that up with another 18 points on Saturday – and all in the first half. If not for a sprained ankle that hampered him after halftime, there probably would have been even more points. Kelly was sharp with his jumper and on Saturday it wasn’t all threes either as he nailed a couple of pull-ups and also got to the hoop. Definitely a nice start to the season for the senior point guard.
Matthew Verkamp Matthew Verkamp 6'4" | SF Sherwood | 2023 State OR (2023 Sherwood)
Verkamp had a solid all-around scoring game for Sherwood on Saturday, leading the Bowmen in scoring with 23 points on a variety of shots. The 6-foot-4 swingman started off sinking daggers from deep and that opened up the lane for him, as in the second half he focused on getting to the rim and finishing through contact for a couple of traditional and-one conversions. He hit the boards hard too and picked up 9 rebounds.
Ethan Eckard Ethan Eckard 6'3" | SG Sherwood | 2024 State OR (2024 Sherwood)
Coming off the bench, Eckerd provided offensive punch with his shooting. He sank three from deep but also a couple more from mid-range and finished with 15 points. His ability to get buckets in a hurry should pay dividends for the Bowmen, both in the early going with star guard Jared Sucher Jared Sucher 6'4" | SG Sherwood | 2023 State OR out of action (sprained ankle) and down the road as well.
Douglas Bailey Douglas Bailey 6'3" | SF Tigard | 2023 State OR (2023 Tigard)
Amazingly consistent throughout Tigard’s win over Sunset was Bailey, who not only scored 8 points in each half but did so in the same manner – two threes and two free throws. Hitting from distance is something we’ve become accustomed to seeing from the 6-foot-3 senior but Saturday he also contributed in other ways with three rebounds, a couple of assists and steals, and a blocked shot.
Kalim Brown Kalim Brown 6'0" | CG Tigard | 2023 State OR (2023 Tigard)
Back after sitting out Friday (coach’s decision), Brown came off the bench and quickly got to work on both ends of the court. Offensively, it wasn’t as much about the jumpers we’re used to seeing from the 6-foot senior but instead getting to the hoop, especially in transition. At the end of the day, in addition to five total made field goals (including a three), he shot 5-for-6 from the line finishing with 16 points to tie for the team high.
Malik Brown Malik Brown 6'0" | PG Tigard | 2023 State OR (2023 Tigard)
Similar to his twin brother, Brown came off the bench and instantly made an impact. As opposed to scoring though, the 6-foot senior flipped into distributor mode and really looked to find his open teammates for scores, especially in the second half as the Tigers pulled away. When all of the dust settled, he had dotted the statsheet with 8 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.
Colt Ness Colt Ness 5'10" | PG Tigard | 2025 State OR (2025 Tigard)
Ness started the last couple of games at the point and while his stats weren’t necessarily huge – just 7 points and a couple of assists on Saturday – he was able to provide a calm presence while he was out on the court. The 5-foot-10 sophomore made solid decisions, took good care of the basketball, and played with poise as the heir apparent to the point guard spot starting next season.
Connor Stone (2023 Sunset)
Tough afternoon for Sunset against Tigard as nobody ended up scoring in double figures. Stone was close though as he canned three from deep to finish with nine points. The ability of the 5-foot-11 senior guard being able to knock down open shots will be key to the Apollos success when defenses collapse on starf forward Kayin Turner Kayin Turner 6'5" | SF Sunset | 2024 State OR .
Drew Satterthwaite (2023 David Douglas)
Despite the tough loss, Satterthwaite had a solid outing for the Scots. He’s a solid high school post at 6-foot-4 and he showed good hands in catching and finishing some hard-earned plays in the paint. He also wasn’t afraid to get physical and use his body on the boards, finishing with a team-high 6 rebounds.
