The energy throughout the gyms was exhilarating as each team participating played the game with a determination to start the season off as champions! Here are 4 players that truly exhibited excellence throughout the tournament:
Wyatt Powell Wyatt Powell 6'3" | SG Metro Christian | 2024 State OK 2024 – Metro Christian: Wyatt was lights out at the Cleveland Invitational. He averaged 22 points per game and he was nearly unstoppable. 3’s, baseline drives, jumpers, coast to coast finishes, boards, blocks and some powerful dunks! He can do it all on offense but he was just as stellar on the defensive end. Wyatt is making a name for himself and he seems to be making it his personal mission to ensure that Metro Christian has a long and successful season.
Mario Darrington 2023 – Metro Christian: Mario plays basketball with confidence and certainty. He trusts his abilities as a ball handler, shooter and defender and this was on full display in the championship game of the Cleveland Invitational. Mario dribbled through multiple traps, shot the 3 with ease and never played lax on defense. His energy is unrivaled and he had his whole bench going crazy after an impressive dunk! Mario was, hand down, one of the most fun players to watch!
Jermiah Johnson 2024 – Edison: Jermiah is electrifying to watch! In the first 4 minutes of the game, he attacked the defense and finished with a lay up, finished an “and one” with authority, stole the ball twice, tipped an inbounds pass, hustled and saved a loose ball going out of bounds and suffocated the offense with his defense! He is the total package. He stays on 100 every second that he is on the court. Jermiah can find the holes in the defense for easy finishes and never stops moving on offense. He doesn’t need much room to shoot and his release is lightning fast. Jermiah is on track to have a season that will open a lot of eyes.
Dylan Baker 2023 – Cleveland: Dylan is a force on the court – and, don’t let his size fool you because at 6’3″/220, he is as shifty as they come. He was able to break down the defense on a number of occasions by attacking the basket and was almost automatic from behind the arc. Dylan was effective both offensively and defensively as he made a number of stops at the basket and was the high scorer for the game dropping 20+ points. Dylan’s physicality will definitely benefit the Cleveland team throughout the season.
