One of the most dominant two-way players in the state, Kirkman has great footwork and touch around the rim with either hand. The Augustana (SD) commit has also been operating as a ball-handler much more this season, looking comfortable with the ball in his hands at 6-8, bringing it up the floor, initiating the offense, and using his improved handle to create additional looks for himself off the bounce.
2.) 2024 Owen Larson Owen Larson 6'1" | PG Estherville Lincoln Central | 2024 State IA (Estherville Lincoln Central) – 30.7
A high IQ, tough guard who gets to the rim seemingly at will, Larson is having a massive junior year for the Midgets, averaging 9.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists a game to go with his huge scoring numbers. He is accounting for well over half of the team’s scoring so far this season.
3.) 2023 Jacob Hargens Jacob Hargens 6'2" | PG Sioux Central | 2023 State IA (Sioux Central) – 30.4
A dominant 6-3 scoring wing, Hargens has the size and strength to bully smaller defenders en route to the rim, and the quickness and ball-handling to blow by bigger defenders. Pair that with a pure stroke from the arc, and you’ve got one of the state’s elite scorers. In addition to his 30+ points a game, Hargens is averaging nearly 12 points and 4 assists a night.
4.) 2023 Isaiah Naylor Isaiah Naylor 6'0" | SG Roland-Story | 2023 State IA (Roland-Story) – 25.2
A talented, creative shotmaker, Naylor is one of the best players on this top 10 at creating his own shot. He’s a skilled ball-handler who gets the ball into his shooting pocket quickly off the dribble, and he has really improved as an off-ball threat this season as well. He’s knocking down 40% of his 3-point attempts for the Norsemen.
5.) 2024 Jack Miller Jack Miller 6'0" | PG Jesup | 2024 State IA (Jesup) – 24.9
Like Naylor, Miller is a really talented ball-handler who is arguably better shooting it off the dribble than he is off the catch. He has a quick release and the ability to stop on a dime and elevate into his smooth jumper from anywhere within the halfcourt line. He has steadily improved his ability to finish around the rim and turned himself into a really dangerous all-around scoring threat.
6.) 2023 Drew Chance Drew Chance 6'2" | PF Albia | 2023 State IA (Albia) – 24.5
Chance is Mr. Do-It-All for the Blue Demons, leading the team in scoring, rebounding (8.5), and assists (3.5). He was a really good low-post player early in his high school career and has done a great job continuing to add to his game. Heading into last year, they asked him to become the team’s primary ball-handler, and he handled that well. This year he has added a reliable jumper to his arsenal, knocking down 42% of his 3-point attempts so far this season.
7.) 2025 Gavin Kramer (Northeast, Goose Lake) – 24.0
This is a tricky one, and I debated whether or not to include it in this countdown, because Kramer has only played in one game so far this season for the Rebels. But that one game was sensational, dropping 24 points against Durant in the season-opener. A 6-1 guard who can create his own shot or get looks for others, he’s a talented offensive weapon who gets to the rim quite a bit.
8.) 2024 Brooks Moore Brooks Moore 6'5" | SF Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont | 2024 State IA (Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont) – 23.2
An explosive athlete who thrives in transition and attacking the rim relentlessly, Moore loves to dunk and looks to do so as often as possible for the Rockets. He uses his size, athleticism, and length to impact the game on both ends of the floor.
9.) 2024 Preston Ries Preston Ries 6'1" | SF Monticello | 2024 State IA (Monticello) – 22.0
A bouncy, powerful athlete who has committed to play football at Iowa, Ries uses a lot of those same traits to dominate on the hardwood as well. He’s a physical combo forward with the explosive leaping ability to dominate on the glass and finish around the rim. He’s a streaky shooter who can get really hot and knock down a bunch of shots in a hurry as well.
10.) 2024 Ty Northup (Louisa-Muscatine) – 21.7
A 6-2 wing who does everything for the Falcons, Northup is leading the team in scoring, rebounding (7.6), assists (3.8), and steals (2.1) while posting impressive 53-43-65 shooting splits. He has proven himself to be a solid ball-handler who can create looks for himself and others.
