SubscribeIn this article, I took a deeper dive into some promising players we haven’t mentioned yet in the 2023 class. These guys all had solid years in 2021-22 but have the potential to be much better in the upcoming season and really cement themselves as prospects to know in their final high school season.

The first impression of Brown is a tall and strong guard with great range. At 6’6, he effortlessly launches from long-range and hits at a good clip, even as he steps further back. He does a little bit of everything for Washington but he profiles as a wing player at the next level with high potential as a “three and D” player. There are glimpses of his defensive potential with his combo of size and strength, where Brown can send shots back and lock players up on the perimeter with his length, but the missing piece seems to be a higher motor right now. If he can bring the energy up defensively this kid can be a solid two-way contributor at the next level. He already shows a want to mix it up on the glass so it’s evident he has the right mindset in him to grind and get physical.

Anderson is a bit off the map at Raymond High School on the Western Coast and the mouth of the Willapa River. Last season they were led by Tre Seydel who scored nearly 30 points per game. This year it will most certainly be Anderson’s squad as the Seagulls lose both Seydel and Adrian Quintana. Those two combined for over 43 points and 8 assists per game. Anderson was no slouch either, posting 14.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.7 steals per game in 2021-22. He’s a smooth player that won’t wow you physically but shows nice touch around the rim plus a quick first step to get there and is comfortable facing up or with his back to the basket. Anderson plays a patient style of ball but is still ready and aggressive when the opportunities come. There is a lot of scoring gone from last season, but Anderson has the smooth jumper and touch at the rim to take on a lot of those points.
Vargas is a physical guard who really stands out on the defensive end but also has the ability to lead on offense with the ball in his hands, creating looks by driving and dishing. He averaged 1.8 steals and 1.1 blocks last season which highlights his ability to physically overpower and overmatch most guards he lined up against. He’s also an active player on the boards, pulling down 6.4 rebounds per game last season, and if he can get stronger finishing at the rim, should be able to improve on his 11.5 points per game from a year ago. There is a lot to like with Vargas heading into his senior season as he plays with great energy and physicality that creates a lot of opportunities out of very little.

Cook was an unheralded piece of a tough R A Long team last season that was led by

and Aaron Ofstun. Holden returns for his senior year, but Ofstun is now playing for Regis University, and Cook is the Lumberjacks’ only player over 6’1. He showed last season that he can play the position well, doing all the things you look for from a solid big man; rebound, defend the hoop, and hit high-efficiency shots. Cook has the strength to rebound well and muster up close shots through contact, but he also moves fairly well for his size and can be a big factor on the pick and roll and covering ground across the defensive paint. This season is a great chance for Cook to expand his game and show what he can do as one of the primary players for a team with 2A State Title aspirations.

Schreck plays like a seasoned guard, he’s patient on the attack but also knows when to push and prod defenses. The lefty has a sweet stroke from outside with a quick release, compact motion, and consistently good follow-through. As a lefty, he likes to come off the right wing into the middle for an elbow pullup and gets good elevation on the shot. He has some solid wing players to set up too, in

. Schreck can get a little crafty too once defenses key in on his shooting, and he could help Capital be a team on the rise in the 2022-23 season.

This guy is a late bloomer with big upside. According to Coach JC Alexander, Washington was only 5’9 as a freshman. Now, entering his senior season he stands at 6’6. He has great length, good bounce and athleticism, and shows a really aggressive mindset around the hoop. He works hard on the glass, loves to go right back up with it, and has the strong hands you need as an inside player to catch passes in traffic and hold onto rebounds through swiping defenders. He should be a bigger factor for Mountain View this season but already shows a lot of promise for someone who by all means could still be growing and getting used to playing at this size.
