I was able to attend the event for most of the day on Sunday Oct. 23 and here’s a look at some of the top standouts I saw.
1.
Bishop Brooks
Bishop
Brooks
6'4" | SF
Taft | 2024
State
CA-S
– Taft 2024
Brooks is a good wing prospect with a solid playmaking game. He’s comfortable handling the ball on the break or in the halfcourt and he can create shots for himself or for his teammates. Consistently attacks the rim and can draw fouls and get to the free-throw line. Can also kick the ball back out to open players. Does a good job moving without the ball too off curls. Consistent shooter from three. Defensively, he’s strong on ball, stays in front of ball-handler and forces them to pick up their dribble. Recovers well if beat.
2. Gordon Deng – Cooper Academy 2023
Deng has a combination of skills. He can play in the post and has good footwork and patience, doesn’t force/rush shots. Active around the basket with a soft touch in the paint. He can handle the ball a little bit and he has range out to the three-point line off the catch. Can also shoot the midrange consistently in face up. Very athletic and use his length to crash the glass and grab offensive rebounds. Does a good job kicking the ball back out to reset.
3. Tong Maiwen – St Paul 2025
Maiwen did most of his work in the paint. He has a good motor, plays with a lot of energy and is effective around the basket. He can establish post position and seal off this defender. Has good footwork and can finish with either hand. He also has a little hook shot when playing with his back to the basket. Can shoot face up and shoot the midrange jumper. He moves well without the ball, gets free in the paint and in position for a pass. Good rebounder who can finish off put-backs through traffic.
4. Kingsley Ashley – Sunny Hills 2024
Ashley is a bit of a forward/big hybrid. He’s strong and uses that strength to finish at the rim through traffic. He can also draw fouls and get himself to the free-throw line. He moves well along the baseline in the dunker spot and is active in the paint. Teammates look for him around the rim. A good rebounder, especially on the offensive glass, but does need to work on control a little bit in terms of being patient and being able to bait the defense.
