Continue ReadingAs a sophomore for Jesup last season, Miller established himself as one of the better pure shot creators and shot makers in the small-school classes. He continued to do so throughout the afternoon at the Top 250. He’s a talented ball-handler who gets to whatever spots he wants with ease and he understands how to subtly create space to get his shot off. He’s an excellent shooter off the dribble, stopping on a dime and elevating into his shot, and he’s really good at finishing around the rim with either hand.
Highlights
Flood is a skilled lead guard who is able to break down the defense and get into the teeth of it, where he showed a strong floater game and good court vision and passing instincts. He does a really good job playing with pace, changing speeds to get by defenders, and he has a solid mid-range game.
Highlights
Drake Warland
Drake Warland
A young point guard who showed some skills playing both with and without the ball in his hands, Warland really does a good job keeping the ball and the action moving. He’s a good ball-handler who protects the ball and doesn’t force anything, and he showed some solid play within the pick-and-roll.
A big off-ball wing, Hughes is armed with a really quick release off the catch and extended range. He didn’t shoot it particularly well in the game that we saw, but the form is good and he gets great rotation on his jumper, they just weren’t falling for him. He has the look of a knockdown shooter who can put a ton of pressure on a defense with his ability to shoot it.
Lucas came down from Minnesota for this event and played well throughout. He’s a really good on-ball defender who moves his feet well and uses his length effectively. He showed the ability to play in the pick-and-roll as a lead ball-handler, creating looks for himself and others, and he also showed that he can move off the ball to get looks.
Eskildsen was one of the most productive freshmen in the state last year, averaging 13.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists for the Vikings. He played well at the Top 250, showing that he can score from all three levels, put the ball on the floor and create for himself or his teammates, and compete on the glass. He has a big frame that he can continue adding some strength to and good hands.
Highlights
A mobile, bouncy big man from Linn-Mar, Bettis does a little bit of everything for his teams, whether it’s the Lions, Iowa Prep, or his team at the Top 250. He’s a versatile defender who can switch on the perimeter or protect the rim, and he rebounds at a high level on both ends of the floor. He showed some good court vision on his post touches, willing to kick out to an open shooter on the weakside or find another big man when the defense collapses.
A junior big man who showed good hands, Bryte does a good job running the floor hard to establish early post position. He has solid touch around the rim and looks to finish through contact. He showed a pure stroke from the free-throw line as well, suggesting that he may be able to add a little bit of range to his game over the next year.
Highlights
Blatchford put up some really big numbers as a junior for West Monona (18.6 points, 11.3 rebounds) and I was excited to get my first live look at him. He played well on both ends of the floor, showing a little bit of everything that his statistical line suggested we would see. He can score from all three levels, showing confidence in his jumper as well as really solid footwork and touch on post touches. He’s a long, lanky defender who can provide some versatility on that end, and he competes hard on the glass on both ends of the floor.
