These four underclassmen really stood out to me as I went back over the tape as guys who can step in right away and have an impact for their squad’s next season.
Birley looks long for 6’3 but moves really well, can handle the ball and create looks for his shot off the dribble. At the expo he was hitting threes and worked in a few nice moves, dribbling in and then working out a few steps, showing nice footwork to get off and sink the mid-range shot. He played quite a bit last season for the West Valley Rams and should be a productive player for them heading into his sophomore season.
Highlights
The game I watched with St. Louis happened to be one of the sloppier games of the day. St. Louis stood out because he was one of the few kids playing “good basketball,” making the right plays, doing the little things, and contributing in ways you want to see when the game results really matter. He has a good stroke from downtown, shows some nice awareness with his cuts and hustle plays, and should be able to have an immediate impact in however many minutes he gets at Kentwood this year.
I saw Schow once earlier this summer but seeing him again my first thought was, “Wow he looks big.” At 6’4, the Tenino guard provides a big and broad frame that brings a ton of playmaking and potential for physicality. He made a bunch of solid plays around the rim and on the boards. He was confidently aggressive taking the ball to the hoop and was one of the more impressive young players at the expo.
Norman was one of the younger, smaller players attending the expo but he showed impressive confidence with the ball, making good decisions and displaying an overall calm demeanor. He’s super quick and has a nice cross he went to repeatedly. The lefty definitely has some high potential hidden in there and is one to watch as his high school career goes on.
