Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
The senior guard was ultra-efficient in the win over Richland, totaling 22 points on 7-of-11 from the field and chipping in six assists, five rebounds, and three steals. He was really in rhythm and picked up a pretty quiet 22 points, just getting to his spots, mixing up his attacks with his playmaking, using his patience to read the floor, and continued to stay a dual threat through every possession.

Birley dealt with some tough defensive coverages throughout the tournament but his ability to sink deep shots helped him break through and created more opportunities for him to work closer in. He played some tough ball and showed some real shot-making ability from the midrange, and an impressive ability to weave through defenders to the rim. He scored 38 points in their opening game but also did his fair share of playmaking and was clearly the engine for the Rams throughout the weekend.

Birley led the way for West Valley with 29 points in a big win against 2A Grandview. He went for 13 in the first half as the Rams built a decent lead, but in the second half Grandview stormed back and Birley turned it up for 16 more to put the Greyhounds away. He attacked every spot on the floor, sinking tough midrange pull-ups, dropping in several threes, and working his way to the cup with good footwork and deception.

The recent Idaho State commit has been a consistent force over the last two years and can score from each level with a blend of smooth shooting and a keen ability to get to his spots. Things could be coming together not just for Birley in his senior year, but for the West Valley Rams too. They have several guys who have been playing well this summer and Birley is probably pretty determined to end his high school career at the Tacoma Dome.

Birley recently committed to Idaho State and has a good chance to lead his West Valley team back to a Tacoma Dome appearance for the first time since 2020. As fate would have it, they were knocked out in the opening round of the state tournament the last two years by Camas. But Birley has the shot-making to push them over that hump this season after averaging 25 ppg in his junior year.

Landen has great size and length and is able to use it to his advantage easily. His footwork down low was excellent, being able to get open around the rim. Birley created for himself smoothly, getting to his mid-range shot and knocking it down often. He can defend multiple positions, having the strength to guard post players and agility to defend guards.

Birley just has the knockdown stroke from just about anywhere on the court. It looks just as smooth going up as it does coming down and while he shoulders a big workload during the high school season, he’s showing this spring how he can be more selective, pick his spots well within the offense, and find shots in rhythm to supplant the overall team effort. He’s got a great pullup, can knock down tightly contested shots with range, and has a great feel for attacking defenders’ most vulnerable spots off the catch.
