Preseason Player of the Year: 2023 [player_tooltip player_id='956879' first='Tate' last='Petersen'] (Monticello)

The RVC North figures to be one of the best small-school conferences in the state, and good arguments could be made for Petersen, Gallagher, Ries, or Witt to take home this honor. We'll give the nod to Petersen, the headliner of a Monticello team that we have ranked #1 in Class 2A to open the season.

Petersen has been a starter for three straight state tournament teams for Monticello, and there's a real chance at four straight trips for the Panthers. A dynamic shooter who had some massive games with the Iowa Mavericks this summer, he's a strong all-around offensive weapon who scores efficiently, stretches the floor, and gets others involved.

Gallagher has a chance to lead the state in scoring this year following a number of key graduations for the Blazers. A dominant three-level scorer who uses his 6-5 frame to his advantage, he's armed with a silky smooth stroke, unlimited range, and is a good enough ball-handler to get to the rim seemingly at will. His efficiency numbers set him apart from most high-volume scorers in the state.

A future Iowa football player, Ries uses his unique blend of strength, physicality, and athleticism to dominate games on the hardwood as well. He's a fantastic rebounder on both ends of the floor, is capable of stepping out and knocking down 3s, and loves to finish above the rim with authority. He'll also provide some versatility on the defensive end with his quick hands, lateral movement, and ability to contest shots.

A 6-7 big man who is just starting to scratch the surface of his ability, Witt had a breakout junior year for the Storm on both ends of the floor, showing he can be a dominant interior presence as a scorer and rim protector. His footwork and touch has really improved over the last 12-18 months, and he has great timing and instincts on the defensive end, as evidenced by his stellar three blocks a game as a junior.

A throwback big man with fantastic hands, great footwork, and deft touch, McDermott was sensational for the Cougars as a junior, averaging 16 points and shooting nearly 58% from the field. He has a variety of post moves he can throw at defenders and he has great dexterity with either hand.
