There were approximately 25 high school varsity teams in competition it was an opportunity for PH to get a look at some of the areas prospects before the season gets underway. Here we’re taking a look at some of the underclass prospects 2024, and 2025 who we thought played well.
Kendall Brown 6’3 2024 Guard of Cosumnes Oaks HS.
A versatile player who can work for points in the paint, and handle the ball on the perimeter. He has a good jump shot around the free throw area. He’ll be depended on to get points, and rebounds for this team. He handles in transition, gets to the rim off the dribble. He’ll need to convert his shot opportunities. He gives good effort on the defensive side of the ball guarding bigger players.
Tanner Lawrence 6’1 2024 Guard of Granite Bay HS.
Lawrence is a physical guard with a solid body to absorb, and initiate contact with or without the ball. We liked his hard pounding dribbles with the ball. He goes hard and takes his whole body to the rim when attacking, he doesn’t shy away from the contact. He does a good job of being that combo, he runs the point, solid passing. He spots up well in the corners for 3’s. He’ll go for rebounds.
Shawn Underwood Shawn Underwood 6'3" | SF Christian Brothers | 2025 State CA-N 6’4 2025 G/F of Christian Brothers HS
A good size guard with plenty of upside to his game. Underwood has solid handles, with good body control that allow him to maneuver his way into the paint. His ball fake, jab step gets the defender leaning. He uses several moves to get into the paint for different finishes, paint jumpers, spin moves. He can handle the contact on the drive, he makes free throws.
John Tofi John Tofi 6'4" | SF Archbishop Riordan | 2025 State CA-N 6’4 2025 G/F of Sheldon HS.
Tofi looked in mid-season form considering the starting QB on the JV had just played a football game the day before. His passing and decision making was good, he sees the court. He’s got a smoothness to his game, never rushed, plays on balance mostly. He has a good mid-range jumper that goes in, he can hit from 3. He makes plays on both ends. He’s long, still filling his frame.
Shobal Barksdale 6’4 2025 W/F of Sacramento HS.
It was our first look at Barksdale. He’s a muscular prospect a bit on the raw side, but has some tools to work with. He works hard for rebounds, and points in the paint. He takes it up strong off two, has good bounce, and will finish the play through contact. He has good hands to receive, and can hit the paint jumper. He did handle, and pass, and had good movement along the perimeter. We’ll have to see more of him.
Jaylen Valdez 6’3 2025 Guard of Capital Christian HS.
He’s a prospect that can knock down the 3ptr coming up in transition, spotting up in the corner, and spots on the along the perimeter if he’s left unattended too often. He’s worked hard to add balance to his game. He had some success beating the defender off the dribble, he took it hard, used the spin move a few times to finish. He was aggressive on the defensive side of the ball, and he helped on the boards.
