On May 21st-22nd I attended Ron Coleman’s Southwest Showcase Summer Championship (Session 2) at the Kroc Center in Phx, AZ.

I focused on Varsity and JV Gold Boys divisions and I ended up watching 20+ teams.

Here were some of the 2024 shooting guard and small forward standouts from last weekend:

[player_tooltip player_id="1123040" first="Anthony" last="Batson Jr"] NDP (AZ Select Fauske)

A hyper athletic two guard flies on the break. He uses his bounce, length and build to rebound at a high level, get downhill and is a shockingly very good shot blocker for size. He can hit the three but loves to attack off the dribble and get to the rim. He can finish though contact or over with dunks. He will defend multiple positions.

[player_tooltip player_id="1069704" first="Dylan" last="Chavez"] Albuquerque Prep/NM (AZ Unity EYBL 16)

A good sized wing with skill. He is crafty and he can shoot it to the three point line plus score in the paint using his size. He can pull-up off the dribble from mid-range and finish shots inside. His IQ, skill, passing skills and savvy get it done.

[player_tooltip player_id="1177608" first="Makhi" last="Golston"] North Canyon (PAL Elite 17)

The lone soph on their 17U team has a strong frame and good skill. He can hit the three with some consistency and uses his body and handle to get into the lane. He has long arms to play the passing lanes and rebounds well.

[player_tooltip player_id="1141426" first="Jase" last="Kooima"] Williams Field (UH Elite 17)

A bigger sized shooting guard grew at least one or two inches since my last viewing of him. He uses it to score it better in the painted area and will score versus the post players. He is crafty, he can shoot it to the three point line and makes smart reads.

[player_tooltip player_id="1194200" first="Tim" last="Gorham"] Eastmark (UH Elite 17) (Pictured)

A high motored wing forward eats on the glass. His will to grab the ball versus his opponent is a true skill. He isn’t explosive but has good awareness where the ball will land off of the backboard and jumps up and times it. He scores on put backs and is a junk yard dog on both sides of the court.

[player_tooltip player_id="1241536" first="David" last="Yourkoski"] Cicero Prep (AZ Select Jerrica 16)

A sturdy framed undersized forward can shoot it and comes with toughness. He plays at a small school so he is used to playing versus bigger players in the post despite his size. He battles in the paint and will rebound at a good clip and he can score it inside as well. He hits the three with some range and brings his hard hat.

Memphis Noble SG 6’2 Desert Vista (Team Phoenix 16)

A newcomer for me was at South Mountain HS and is transferring to Desert Vista. He is a long athlete who will defend on the ball. He gets to the basket easily with a quick burst and his long strides to finish off tough layups in traffic.
