One. Moving the Basketball. The item that caught my eye the most was how well Howard Pulley shared the basketball to get this win. They had 18 assists on 27 makes which is a very impressive number especially in the modern day AAU setting. Also, six of their eight guys that played scored on at least three possessions and against the full court pressuring team that they faced it was another reason they earned this win, and went 4-0 on their recent May trip to KC.
Two. Nolan Winter Nolan Winter 7'0" | PF Lakeville North | 2023 State #98 Nation MN ’s Potential. Winter is the modern day pick and pop four man that people have talked about as the game continues to develop. His ability to set a good screen and immediately relocate to quickly get feet set is high level as is his three point shooting for his position. In this game Nolan hit six threes and 12 of 16 shots total. The other six makes? Four were low post scores: two post moves scoring over the left shoulder, two post moves scores over the right shoulder. Winter’s other two scores were rim runs. He scored with range, back to the basket post moves, and effort players for his 30 points. Also grabbed 13 rebounds, blocked three shots, and I thought did an excellent job of getting sprinting the floor possession to possession and getting second chance opportunities.
Three. Welcome Back Mr. Underwood! It was nice to not only see Will Underwood Will Underwood 6'0" | PG Mahtomedi | 2023 State MN back playing basketball after his knee injury, but evaluating this game and seeing him play so well! Will scored 17 points with 6 assists on 6 of 13 shooting and half of those makes were rim attacks against a pressuring team. Really liked the way Underwood set the tone moving the basketball for his team creating shots when his team broke pressure, moving the ball off the high screen, and attacking and kicking to teammates. I’m sure Underwood still has more to go in terms of getting comfortable after his recovery from the injury but I thought he looked very good in my first viewing of him this spring.
Four. The Hustle of Emmanuel. I really enjoyed all the things that Eagan guard Emmanuel Schmitter Emmanuel Schmitter 6'3" | SG Eagan | 2023 State MN brought to the team. The most noteworthy items to me were his defensive hustle battling back on defense or his fight over to get to help forcing tougher shots from opponents. Thought he did a great job passing the ball plus Emmanuel grabbed five rebounds in addition to the six points scored.
Five. The Pulley Group. Conner Kraft from North Dakota was solid scoring his seven points with six boards, Alex Jones Alex Jones 6'1" | SG Minnetonka | 2023 State MN fought back from some early shooting struggles to make foul shots that put away the game (scored six points), and the aggressive Jency Davis Jency Davis 5'9" | PG Columbia Heights | 2024 State MN of Columbia Heights had seven points four rebounds, and three assists.
