Tournaments begin on Thursday and we’ll take a look at some of the marquee tourneys later on this week. In this post, we take a look at some of the top games from Tuesday night and some of the top results and one of the bigger upsets in Tuesday’s games. We also spotlight some of the top scoring performances from Tuesday as well. Keep it locked in to Prep Hoops Oklahoma throughout the week as we dive into tournament basketball!
BROKEN ARROW 71, BIXBY 60
We wrote about Broken Arrow’s trip to Arizona on Tuesday and they returned to the court for their home opener on Tuesday night against Bixby. It was a fast-paced start to the game and despite limiting Bixby’s star junior Parker Friedrichsen Parker Friedrichsen 6'4" | SG Bixby | 2023 State #165 Nation OK in the first half, the Spartans still led the Tigers at halftime. Broken Arrow would go down double digits in the third quarter but they would rally to win 71-60.
The Tigers used a 20-4 run in the third quarter, sparked by junior forward Connor Dow Connor Dow 6'6" | SF Broken Arrow | 2023 State #252 Nation OK to give the Tigers the lead for good. We knew about the 1-2 punch of Anthony Allen Anthony Allen 6'5" | SF Broken Arrow | 2022 State OK and Dow for the Tigers and they did their part, each scoring 15 points. However, the Tigers also got a team-high 16 points from junior forward Ethan Ellison in the win. For Bixby, star guard Parker Friedrichsen Parker Friedrichsen 6'4" | SG Bixby | 2023 State #165 Nation OK still led all scorers with 20 points, but Broken Arrow made things very tough for him throughout the night, consistently sending double teams his way and limiting his touches.
The Tigers return to the floor next Tuesday on the road in Sand Springs. It’s a road trip week for the Tigers next week as they’ll face Sand Springs Tuesday before a showdown at Union on Friday. Speaking of Union…
UNION 69, BARTLESVILLE 68 (OVERTIME)
Arguably the best game on the east side of the state last night took place in Bartlesville as Union would go on the road and knock off the Bruins 69-68 in an overtime thriller. After Bartlesville missed a free throw that would have put the Bruins up by two points, the Redhawks pushed the pace and scored on a lay up with just seconds remaining to get out of Bartlesville with the win.
Union was incredibly balanced in the scoring department, which isn’t entirely surprising considering how talented and deep their starting unit is. On Tuesday night, it was sophomore guard Dalen Fuller Dalen Fuller 6'4" | CG Union | 2024 State OK who led the Redhawks in scoring. Star junior forward Trent Pierce Trent Pierce 6'6" | SF Union | 2023 State #73 Nation OK and sophomore Chris Mason Chris Mason 6'6" | PF Victory Christian | 2024 State OK also finished in double figures for the Redhawks. A little over a month into the season, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more athletic guard than Fuller. When he’s on his game, this Union team will cause plenty of problems for opponents.
And since we mentioned problems for opponents, Bartlesville super sophomore David Castillo continued to show why he’s one of the best not only in Oklahoma but in this part of the country. Going at a long and athletic Union team, Castillo led all scorers with 26 points. Some coaches have mentioned keeping the Bartlesville star under 30 has to be considered a win. Castillo is easily one of the best scorers that we’ve seen so far this season.
BLANCHARD 45, TUTTLE 43
This has to be considered the upset of the night as Blanchard took down Tuttle 45-43 on Tuesday night. The Lions, unranked in the 4A coaches rankings, trailed #4 Tuttle for the majority of the game but would stay within striking distance going into the fourth quarter. The Lions would hold Tuttle to just 7 points in the final quarter, outscoring them 12-7 in the final frame to get the win. It’s Tuttle’s first loss since the season opener against Kingfisher.
