Given the way the powerful 5-foot-11, 190-pound guard has started off his senior season, college coaches should be paying notice. David Douglas has done some damage in the early going – including getting the call to fill in at the Les Schwab Invitational – and Collins has been a huge part of the success.
After being one of the parts of the machine last season, Collins has stepped up his game. He’s leading the team in scoring at over 15 points per game, which includes four 20-point performances. He knew that he would be counted upon in 2021-22 and while he didn’t get to do as much during the off-season as he would have hoped, he did his best to work on his game.
“I played a little bit in the summer, but we didn’t get to many tournaments because of COVID,” Collins said. “But I worked on my shot, trying to get it so that people have to come out and guard me.”
The results of the work have shown up on the court. As usual, the well-built senior has been tremendous getting to the basket and using his strength to finish through contact at the hoop. He’s been a bulldog on defense as always. But Collins has also been able to knock down jumpers fairly consistently and his hope is that the improvements will lead to some college basketball opportunities. He mentions that he’s been in communication with Portland Community College but remains open to all options.
“I’m looking at anything that I can get,” Collins said. “I just want someone to be interested in me.”
David Douglas currently stands 5-3 and their power ranking rests at #16. As usual, the Scots see themselves as underdogs and Collins has his sights set high. “We want to get to state and show that we’re coming different this year,” Collins said. “Individual goals, I just want to be a better leader and make my teammates better.”
Collins currently ranks as the #44 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
