Hosted by Tournament Director Cecelia Tennert, the event is held to raise money for the Sierra Kids Foundation, a Reno based Non-Profit organization that supplements the efforts of three Northern Nevada programs that work directly with families and young children with Autism. The tournament featured high school teams from Northern California, Las Vegas, and Reno, with the Championship being taken home by Prephoops Nevada #1 Ranked 5A Bishop Gorman. Several players used the event as a way to raise their profiles. In this article, we take a look at some of the top Sleepers from the event.
Kasen Boggs Kasen Boggs 6'3" | CG Douglass | 2022 State NV 6’2 CG Douglas 2022 (featured image) – Boggs is a bucket. The 6’2 combo proved he can score the ball from a variety of levels. I was impressed with his ability to handle the ball, as he displayed quick COD ability. He was the main weapon for Douglas averaging just under 15ppg for the event. His scoring ability and handle translate well at a NAIA or D3 level.
Ethan Goon Ethan Goon 6'7" | PF Bishop Manogue | 2023 NC 6’6 PF Bishop Manogue 2023 – Goon is a sleeper because of his skill. The stretch 4 loved to play on the perimeter and showed that he can do it effectively. Goon managed to knock down several 3’s throughout the weekend, while still making his presence felt around the rim. With his size and skill, he fits what many coaches are looking for in a small ball 4 man.
Isaiah Garcia Isaiah Garcia 6'2" | CG Bishop Manogue | 2023 State NV 6’2 PG Bishop Manogue 2023 – This was my first time getting a look at Garcia, and I liked what I saw. The PG is more of a combo, but he did display a solid handle. His best weapon was his pull-up jumper, as he used it to consistently get into the lane and score. He also showed that he was a willing defender, as he played low and in a stance while hawking opposing ballhandlers.
Jaelin McDougall Jaelin McDougall 6'2" | SG Spanish Springs | 2022 State NV 6’2 SG Spanish Springs 2022 – McDougall has a quiet but effective game. He never seemed to handle the ball that much, but whenever I looked up he was getting a bucket. He reached double figures in two games averaging exactly 10ppg for the tournament.
Nate Penny Nate Penny 6'1" | CG Spanish Springs | 2023 State NV 6’1 SG Spanish Springs 2023 – Penny had his moments and played well in spurts for SS. The junior showed the ability to shoot the ball at a high rate, knocking down 4 three-pointers in 1 game. He finished the tournament with a total of 7 made 3’s for the weekend, en route to averaging just under 10 per game during the course of the event. With shooting at a premium, the junior is definitely a player to keep a close watch on.
