The point guard made big play after big play all the way through their run and for him, there was a measure of redemption. Injury hampered him last year but the hard-nosed 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior is back better than ever and he couldn’t be happier with how things have been panning out so far for him and his teammates.
“It feels great,” Breyman said. “We worked hard and we deserve it – it wasn’t given to us. Everyone came (through) in the clutch. We had to win and we got it.”
Breyman played a huge role. His step-back three to force overtime in the semifinals against Beaverton will go down in Capitol City Classic history, but throughout the tournament he was rock solid on both ends of the floor. It helped earn him the Tournament MVP award but the truth of the matter is, he didn’t go into the event looking to prove anything.
“I just played basketball, you know,” Breyman said. “What they gave me, they gave me and that’s all there is to it. I think I’ve gotten better on my shooting – I worked on that a lot over the summer. It’s been a bounce back year for me.”
At the tournament, Breyman showed great toughness getting to the basket and finishing, using his muscular build to power past opponents and absorb contact. He knocked down open jumpers and ran the offense relatively turnover free, and played super hard on the defensive end. Breyman remains under the radar recruiting wise and noted that he’s open to anything at this point in time. He’s just looking to play out the year with West Salem and is hopeful the tournament championship will be just a preview of what’s to come.
“We have a lot to improve on, but we’re going to get there,” Breyman said. “We’re 5-1 now and it’s going good. It’s a lot of momentum for us. I think we can go all the way. It’s going to be tough but I think this team can go all the way. We’ve got good guys.”
