The solid 6-foot-6, 205-pound swingman got some varsity time last year as a sophomore but he’s ready to take on a bigger role this season. He’s coming off a solid summer playing AAU basketball with the Oregon Prospects 16U squad and his hope is that the opportunity to play against high level competition has helped prepare him for what awaits him this year with the Rams.
“Playing on a big stage was really cool, just playing against big teams on big stages,” Thompson said of his summer. “For me, that was the biggest part – that experience. My feel for the game got a lot better – I felt a lot more fluid out there.”
We got a chance to watch Thompson play in a number of games with the Prospects and what stood out right away was his ability to shoot the ball, especially for someone his size. One particular game in Las Vegas stands out where Thompson drained five consecutive threes on five consecutive possessions.
The Prospects 16U squad played in front of a number of college coaches and Thompson noted that some schools have reached out, but nothing too serious at the moment. With that said, he’s keeping all options open. “At this point, I’m definitely looking for any opportunity to play – that’s it,” Thompson said. “I just want to play in college.”
Embracing his bigger role with Central Catholic this junior year will be key. He’ll see time both in the frontcourt and backcourt and he’s ready to contribute. “I just want to come out here and do what I do, shoot the ball and rebound,” Thompson said. “I just want to play team basketball.”
Thompson currently ranks as the #16 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2023 rankings.
