LA VERNE, CA—Despite a surge of Covid over the Southland, the Classic at Damien persevered with some outstanding games and talent galore—especially the underclassmen. There were some senior standouts like Colorado State-bound Jack Payne (Owyhee/ID) and Fresno State-bound Joseph Hunter Joseph Hunter 6'3" | PG San Joaquin Memorial | 2022 #80 Nation CA-S (Damien) as well as some scintillating underclassmen like 2024 Vyctorius Miller (Crean Lutheran) and 2025 Jovani Ruff (LB Poly).
Rodney Brown (Rancho Christian)
2023, SG, 6-foot-5, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: The willowy Brown had his smooth jump shot clicking against SO Notre Dame. He has very long arms and has grown 3 inches in the last few months. He shows solid ball skills, doesn’t over-handle it, and advances the ball in transition. Definitely one of the fastest rising juniors in the West.
Dusty Stromer Dusty Stromer 6'5" | SG Notre Dame | 2023 State #47 Nation CA-S (SO Notre Dame)
2023, WF, 6-foot-6, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: Stromer continued his scoring prowess and he did it in a number of ways. He is known for his 3-point stroke, but there are other aspects of his offensive game that are impressive. He’ll post-up his defender and shoot over the top using his length and his touch is impeccable. Arizona Head Coach Tommy Lloyd was in attendance along with Associate Head Coach Jack Murphy.
Liam Campbell (Owyhee/ID)
2024, SG, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Campbell continued his onslaught at The Classic at Damien. He has a relentless motor, attacks off the dribble with aplomb, and can score from all three levels. His jump shot is buttery and his pull-up game is impressive. In the half court set, he moves well without the ball very well and he can get his jump shot quick. Despite his youth he dropped 107-points in the tournament in 4 games and established himself as one of the elite sophomores in the West.
Isaiah Sherrard (Oak Park)
2023, WF, 6-foot-6, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Sherrard faced some feisty defense from Los Osos, especially their college prospect 2023 Deacon Toliver. However, he was patient and picked his spots when the opportunities presented itself. He has a rangy frame with length that allows him shoot over his opponent, but he has a deceptive burst off the triple threat. He finishes with either hand and is very crafty around the basket. A definite Top 100 prospect here.
