Continue ReadingWe continue our look at the top performers from Sunday’s PrepHoops Top 250 Expo and there were a handful of big men to watch and evaluate. Here’s a look at some of the top ones we saw.
Graham Eikenberry Graham Eikenberry 6'10" | PF St Andrew’s RI | 2023 State OR (2023 Lincoln) – Eikenberry likely ranked up in the top scorers and rebounders on the day as he piled up stats left and right. Some may argue it was because at 6-foot-9 he typically towered over everyone else but the fact is he didn’t play down in height. We’ve always liked how the junior post keeps the ball high from a fundamentals standpoint and he really battled on the offensive glass. He played with plenty of energy and showed plenty of fire on the floor.
Skyler Schmidt Skyler Schmidt 6'8" | SF Central Catholic | 2023 OR (2023 Scappoose) – We were excited to see Schmidt in action and we weren’t disappointed. The 6-foot-7 junior is probably more of a forward than a true big man as he has the ability to step out and play a bit from the perimeter. But inside is where he did the most damage on Sunday, battling for boards and getting a bunch of tough buckets in the paint. In one game we watched, Schmidt consistently finished through contact for a handful of traditional and-ones and in another game, finished off an alley-oop with a one-handed slam.
Ty Best Ty Best 6'6" | PF Cascade | 2023 State OR (2023 Cascade) – Best was another player we were excited to get a look at in this setting and the 6-foot-7 junior did well. He used his strong build to really fight for buckets and rebounds in the paint but also stepped out and hit some mid-range jumpers. While we didn’t personally witness any powerful dunks on Sunday, Best is known for throwing them down and it will be interesting to see how he does this season at Cascade.
Kohl Sinai Kohl Sinai 6'10" | C Westview | 2022 State OR (2022 Westview) – Sinai had a solid Sunday and benefitted from playing on a team where he wasn’t necessarily counted on anything except for rebounding and defense. The 6-foot-10 post ran the floor well, had some good finishes around the hoop, and showed some touch on his face-up jumper. Sinai may still be raw offensively but he’s definitely got something to work with.
Dominic Ball Dominic Ball 6'11" | C Cascade | 2022 State OR (2022 Cascade) – Ball was the top shot-blocker on Sunday, whether it was erasing drives to the paint or coming out to the perimeter for closeouts. At 6-foot-10 he’s got some length in addition to his height and it was hard to shoot around him down low. Offensively he started off slow but started to use some of his basic post moves to get some baskets in later games.
Jonathan Barnes Jonathan Barnes 6'8" | PF La Salle | 2023 State OR (2023 La Salle) – Barnes was an intriguing prospect to watch. At 6-foot-8 he’s got height but right now appears to be more of a finesse big man who runs the floor well and is light on his feet. He was raw offensively but was able to grab a lot of own misses and convert them into points. He was solid on the defensive boards as well and had some impact altering shot attempts.
