In this piece we dig deeper in to our notes to recognize some intriguing prospects who didn’t get mentioned in our initial coverage of the Cali-Live period event in Irvine.
Carrington Pierce, 2024, Prodigy 15 Elite – Pierce is a crafty and smart floor general type of point guard who makes the heady and high IQ play just like his older brother Camren, who is now on scholarship at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The Etiwanda High sophomore has a fluid shooting stroke from three-point range and can fill it up from deep when given time and space.
Jacob Quintana, 2024, Prodigy 15 Elite – Quintana is another Prodigy player who has some good basketball bloodlines as his older brother, Joe, was a star at Bonita high school and is the starting point guard at Loyola Marymount. Jacob has a lot of the same feel as his brother did at the same stage. He possesses a great passing IQ’s, has a good understanding of how to run a team and has great speed which allows him to get into his stop and pop jumper.
Javares Reid, 2024, Oakland Soldiers 15u EYBL – Big men always seem to take the longest to develop, and if Reid’s early skill-set is evidence of what kind of prospect he’ll be in the long run, buy stock now. The 6-foot-7 forward out of Liberty high school in the Las Vegas metro area plays with a great motor on both ends of the floor. Defensively, he’s a capable rim protector who will also step over and take a charge. Offensively, he rim-runs, has good hands and is an active offensive rebounder.
Derek Sangster Derek Sangster 6'7" | SF Archbishop Mitty | 2023 State #213 Nation CA-N , 2023, Real Run 16u – Sangster was a major contributor at Archbishop Mitty during his sophomore season, helping the Monarchs to a 17-1 overall record. The 6-foot-7 wing has a rangy frame with fluid athleticism and an intriguing combination of ball skills and inside-out scoring ability. Sangster can operate on the perimeter with pick-and-pop and catch-and-shoot three’s, but is also a very good slasher who uses his length to extend to the rim and finish at the cup.
