Continue ReadingThe St. Mary’s Team Camp was an opportunity for PH NorCal to see 2022 prospects. June is when high school players, play with their teams and go to camps to prepare for the upcoming season. While there was plenty of talent, and notable players at this camp, our focus was on players we hadn’t seen a lot of. Here’s a group that stood out for the games we watched.
James Frye 6’5 Guard of Miramonte HS 2022
Frye is a along active player that has good movement on the court. He handles the ball well in the open court, with good vision, and decision making when he has the ball. He delivered several quality passes to teammates in transition. His size, and length allows him to get into the paint for short jumpers, and finishes around the rim. He runs the court in transition. He has 3-point range, and will knock it down when the opportunity presents itself.
Cameron Brown Cameron Brown 6'2" | CG Bishop O Dowd | 2022 State CA-N 6’2 Guard of Bishop O’Dowd HS 2022
Brown is a player we’re going to have to see more of. He played one game while we were there. He did enough to show that he’s ready to be a solid contributor his senior season at NorCal powerhouse Bishop O’Dowd. The lefty is strong, and absorbs contact while finishing his shots in the paint. He was aggressive attacking the rim in transition, and has a solid mid-range game. He has good intensity and will defend. We’ll see more of him.
Justin Yasukochi 6’2 Guard of Campolindo HS 2022.
This was our second time seeing Yasukochi play. He’s a quality player that doesn’t make many mistakes. He takes good shots within the flow of the offense and will make open shots. He moves well without the basketball, cutting and slashing, and is ready to drive or shoot depending on what the defense gives. He doesn’t waste touches he’ll move it or shoot it. A good help defender.
Logan Baltazar 6’4 W/F of James Logan HS 2022.
He’s a good sized wing player with sneaky hops. He works well on the wings, and post area. He was effective getting to the basket in half court, and transition. If there’s the slightest of openings, he’ll throw it down with force. He was effective hitting the boards and leading the transition break. He has good body control, and worked well while in the post area with jumpers in the paint, and powering up off two feet.
Cahal Connelly 6’9 PF/C of Bishop O’Dowd HS 2022
We’ve seen Connelly before. He has made steady progress to his overall play. He’s moving better with and without the ball. He has a strong solid build and is playing more confident on both ends of the court. He’s taking up space on defense, being aggressive, and will challenge and defend in the post area. He has improved footwork, and good low post moves to score inside including a jump hook, and the short corner jumper. He has good outlet passes to start the transition break.
Ben Murphy 5’11 SG of Miramonte HS 2022
Murphy was one of the better 3-point shooters we saw on day 2 at this event. He not only knocked down open 3’s, he hit transition 3’s, catch and shoot 3’s, a few of these were deep range. He has good handles, and foot speed to get up a floater on the drive from different angles on the court. We’ll see more of him.
