SANTA ANA, CA—The Mater Dei Monarchs continued their undefeated ways with an uncharacteristic “sloppy” win over a resilient St. Augustine team 62-49 at the Nike Extravaganza. The Monarchs struggled with the Saints full-court press, which resulted in a plethora of turnovers—most notably when the Monarchs’ most skilled player Wilhelm Breidenbach went out of the game with an injury, late in the 2nd half. The Monarchs were led by Harrison Hornery (21-pts and 16-rebs) and Nick Davidson (16-pts and 10-rebs).
Nick Davidson (Mater Dei) College: Nevada
2021, PF, 6-foot-9, 230 pounds
Joel’s Take: Davidson is one of the more skilled “bigs” on the West Coast. He has long arms, great hands, and he knows how to seal on the block for the finish. He can face-up as well and hit the elbow jump shot. However, in this one he had some nice look-ahead passes as well as an impressive weakside block that led to a Monarch transition bucket.
Ian De La Rosa (St. Augustine)
2024, SG, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: De La Rosa is one of many impressive under underclassmen for veteran Head Coach Mike Haupt’s squad. He has a rangy frame with long arms and he has a natural shooting touch. He showed off his 3-point range against the Monarchs as well as a nifty floater. There was a time he could have used the jump stop to avoid a charge, but that should come with maturity.
Jaden Matingou (St. Augustine)
2023, CG, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: The Saints are blessed with a number of up-and-coming guard-types, and matingou is one of the more promising prospects. He has a solid looking frame with good length and he showed solid ball skills, a buidling pull-up game, and an impressive 1st step.
Zach Davidson (Mater Dei)
2023, PF, 6-foot-8, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Davidson has had to be patient this season as Mater Dei is blessed with a senior-laden frontline that is arguably best on the West Coast. However, in this match up, he was able to show glimpses of his potential. He had some nice finishes through contact, handed off an impressive touch pass to Breidenbach for the finish and he displayed solid footwork and soft hands on the block.
