You’ll constantly find the energetic 6-foot-5, 195-pound forward from Sherwood around the ball all the time and he’ll do whatever it takes physically to get the job done. His physical presence was key for Elite 24 this past weekend as he helped the team capture the tournament title.
“It was a great experience,” Kullowatz said. “I played with both (Elite 24) teams this weekend so I was able to get into a lot of games and it was great getting play with Mack (Wall) and Samaje (Morgan). Playing with point guards like Samaje and Leo Sewell Leo Sewell 5'9" | PG Wilson | 2022 State OR out of Wilson – those are my guys now. It was good to be a part of that team win.”
While Elite 24 certainly had height along their frontline – three starters all stand 6-foot-6 or taller – they needed additional muscle and that’s exactly what Kullowatz provided off of the bench. He was a physical defender against opposing post players and his energy was infectious.
“Samaje was saying that I was his ’hype’ man and that’s what I was,” Kullowatz said. “I was out there being Dennis Rodman, getting rebounds and being the ‘hype’ guy – that’s what I was. We played against lengthy guards and tall big guys and that Chicago team we beat in the finals had heart. It was definitely a different breed.”
Kullowatz was a starter for Sherwood last season, largely playing power forward and averaging 4.7 points and 4.0 rebounds a game. While he’ll continue to be a rough and tumble performer inside while hitting the occasional three, Kullowatz is also been trying to improve his overall offensive game.
“I’ve been getting as much as I can in with school as well,” Kullowatz said. “I’ve been working on driving to the hoop. This year will be different as I’ll be in the paint, driving and finishing as well as shooting threes.”
Kullowatz is looking utilizing his expanded role this year to attract the interest of college programs. He notes that he’s already been hearing from local D-III programs and had an unofficial visit to Utah State planned last fall before it was canceled due to COVID. Overall, he’s just looking for the right fit.
“I’m looking for something high energy like me,” Kullowatz said. “I’ve been blessed with good coaches – Josiah Lake at The Practice Facility, Greg Dundon (Elite 24) and Rahim (Tufts at Sherwood) – so I want a good coach and I want great teammates. I want high energy, threes, everything.”
While he wishes the upcoming season with Sherwood was longer and there was a state title – of which he believes the Bowmen would capture – Kullowatz is still excited. He’s especially excited about the rematch that’s scheduled with Jefferson, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season.
“I specifically went to Tufts and said I want that game,” Kullowatz said. “I want them back. I wasn’t happy with how we ended it and I thought that us starters played really well and we just lost it in the middle. I want a full game where we take it to them.”
Kullowatz currently ranks as the #29 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
