The past year the sharp-shooting 6-foot, 185-pound guard has largely been in lockdown, unable to play the game that he loves. But the Sherwood senior is back on the court ready for his final year and is looking to make a decision soon on what college program he’ll be joining next fall.
Since last season ended, Davis has tried to stay positive. Early on he trained a bit with Oregon Basketball Club and also played some club baseball. But as the pandemic raged on, his physical activity became limited to running five miles a day to stay in shape and shooting at the basket in his front yard.
“It was tough as I had to get creative,” Davis said. “I’d get together with other guys outside and we’d rebound for each other. I just tried to do whatever I could.”
Shooting is obviously Davis’ calling card. He owns arguably the quickest shooting release in the state and his range extends out past the NBA three-point line. While Davis will likely exceed over three treys made a game this year, now that he’s been back on the court he’s focused on other areas of his game.
“I’ve been working a lot on my drives,” Davis said. “I’ve been getting stronger as I’ve been lifting a little bit, so when I drive I can use my bigger frame. I’m not the tallest guy but I can use my body to my advantage and finish in the paint or with a floater.”
A high-academic student with a GPA over 4.0, Davis has garnered some Division III attention with roster spot offers from Pacific and Pacific Lutheran. He’s made visits to both schools and has also picked up a baseball offer from Pacific with the possibility of playing both on the diamond and on the court there. Essentially his decision will come down to those two schools.
“I’m looking for either Tacoma Washington or Forest Grove to be my home for the next four years,” Davis said. “I love (Pacific Lutheran) Coach (Chad) Murray – he’s a great coach and all the guys there are really good and they’re getting a lot better as a program. And Pacific is also getting a lot better as a program. Coach (Justin) Lunt is doing a great job down there. His philosophy is to fire it up and try to play fast, and I think that could help me a lot.”
Davis noted that a choice may come within the next couple of weeks as he talks things out with his family and goes over the financial aid packages offered by each school. From there, he’ll put all of his focus on the upcoming season, which he’s really looking forward to.
“I think that we’ll be different from last year, but not worse,” Davis said. “We’re looking at shooting a lot of threes, and our play style – we’ll be one of the fastest teams in the state. Last year we set some records shooting the three – this year I think we’ll be even better.”
Davis currently ranks as the #46 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
