Continue ReadingThe early 2021 season has been a little disjointed to say the least with postponements and long stretches without games. Even with the delays, the freshman class has shown the potential to make a big impact at the varsity level. This is especially true in the backcourt as the guard group is filled with talent. Here are the 2024 shooting guards to keep your eye on.
Jaiden Glover, 6’4 St. Benedict’s
The Grey Bees are loaded with talent in the backcourt, but Glover’s skillset should allow him to make an impact early. The 6’4 guard has a good handle and is able to get to the rim with consistency. Glover is more than just a driver as he has a nice release on his jumper and can get hot from deep in a hurry. He also possesses the size and length to be a versatile defender. Glover picked up an offer from St. John’s in October and that offer sheet will only grow as his career moves forward.
Jalen Sams Jalen Sams 6'3" | SG Morris Catholic | 2024 NJ , 6’3 Pioneer Academy
It’s unfortunate Pioneer Academy opted out of the season due to the pandemic as Sams was set to have a strong debut season. The 6’3 guard has a good shooting stroke and can be deadly when given space to shoot. Sams also has the ability to make plays with the ball in his hands and is at his best in the pick and roll. He is a solid on-ball defender as he moves his feet exceptionally well. Sams’ impact on the game will have to wait a year, but he will be a player to watch next season for Pioneer Academy.
Andrew Buck Andrew Buck 6'3" | SG Ranney School | 2024 State NJ , 6’2 Ranney
Buck plays behind a talented Panther backcourt, but watch out for him in the next couple of years. The 6’2 guard knows how to break his defender down off the bounce and makes plays when he gets into the lane. Buck is a good finisher around the basket and has a nice touch on his floater. He has the ability to defend both positions in the backcourt and is an underrated defender. Buck is a skilled guard prospect who will make an impact on the Shore in the coming years.
Elijah Brown Elijah Brown 6'4" | SG Life Center Academy | 2025 State NJ , 6’3 St. Augustine
The Hermits are one of the top teams in South Jersey, but Brown has still been able to get on the floor. The 6’3 guard attacks the basket with a purpose and is unafraid of drawing contact. Brown has a good handle and does not force the issue on the offensive end. He is a tenacious rebounder and has the length and athleticism to defend multiple positions. Brown is definitely a star in the making for St. Augustine and is showing flashes of his potential during his freshman season.
James Vallillo, 6’0 Holmdel
Vallillo’s future at the next level will probably be on the ball, but he has shown the ability to play off it in his debut season. The 6’0 guard has a nice shooting stroke and does not need a lot of space to get his shot off. Vallillo is more than just a shooter as he can also get to the rim from the perimeter. He makes smart decisions with the ball in his hands and is an underrated rebounder. Vallillo should have a good career at Holmdel as he makes his case for the best freshman in the Shore Conference.
