The lanky 6-foot-7, 170-pound really emerged with his game over this past off-season and his size, length, and ability to shoot the long ball made him one of the top stock risers in our recent rankings update.
Seely-Roberts has certainly kept busy after a solid freshman year where he averaged 15 points, 4.5 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks while hitting 77 threes at 39 percent. Earlier this spring/summer with A-Train Magic and in the fall with a group called CTR put together by his mom, Yamhill-Carlton head coach Heather Seely-Roberts, Seely-Roberts has had an opportunity to get some court time in a number of tournaments in California, Idaho, and Utah.
“We’ve been all over the place and we’ve been able to practice a lot too,” Seely-Roberts said. “It’s fun but at the same time you want to play real games too. I mean with summer games, if you win it’s cool but if you don’t it doesn’t really matter. I kind of wish we had more serious games.”
In these games, Seely-Roberts has displayed an ability to hit deep threes. He’s capable of knocking down shots from beyond the NBA three-point line and it’s a testament to the work he’s been putting in.
“I’ve been shooting two hours a day, working on my outside shooting in our front yard,” Seely-Roberts said. “And A-Train has been giving us a lot of ball-handling workouts. They tell me that if I can be a better ball-handler I can get off some better shots.”
His abilities were also displayed at the Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp, which he attended with twin brother Moroni Seely-Roberts Moroni Seely-Roberts 6'6" | SF Lincoln | 2023 State OR . In fact, Seely-Roberts did well enough that he earned a nod to the Top 30 All-Star game, where he felt he had a blast. Despite the honors, Seely-Roberts remains humble.
“If you’re tall and you shoot threes then it looks cool,” Seely-Roberts said. “But that was one of those things that’s either hit or miss with your team. Me and Moroni were on the same team, but I was on a (group of) five that didn’t shoot a lot and Moroni was on a five that shot every time they touched the ball. So if Moroni had been on my five I think he would have done just as good as I did.”
A 4.0 student, Seely-Roberts is a model student-athlete and his goal is to achieve a Division I scholarship. While twin brother Moroni has noted that Oregon State is his dream school, Malachi is staying open with his options – and that includes if playing with his brother at the college level is in the cards.
“If we do that would be cool, but if not then that would be fine,” Seely-Roberts said.
Seely-Roberts is excited about the possible season ahead and notes that he believes Y-C is one of the top two teams in 3A along with conference rival Amity. He currently ranks as the #8 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2023 rankings.
