Hart County High School in Hartwell hosted the McDonald’s Shootout on Monday, part of a three-day event. Typically a 50/50 split between South Carolina and Georgia schools, constant adjustments to the schedule has led to a majority of the field being GHSA programs. Here are some of the top players from Day 1 of the event.
Top Wings
2023 6-7 W Frankquon Sherman Frankquon Sherman 6'7" | SF Grovetown | 2023 State #271 Nation GA – Lincoln County
It was a forgetful performance from Lincoln County in Round 1 but even in the lopsided loss, Frankquon Sherman Frankquon Sherman 6'7" | SF Grovetown | 2023 State #271 Nation GA showed glimpses of his high ceiling. Known for his elite athleticism and highlight dunks, Sherman used his length and tenacity on the glass to score around the rim. He’s a quick second leaper that can finish through contact when cleaning the glass. Sherman can space the floor, able to play inside-out. He’s a quality ball handler on the perimeter with a good-looking jump shot both off the catch and off the dribble. The All-State sophomore should draw D-I attention soon. He had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 1 block.
2021 6-5 W Caleb Willis – Lincoln County
Grown man. That’s what Caleb Willis is. The football standout is a stud in the weight room, stepping onto the hardwood at a chiseled 215 pounds. Willis has an interesting game. He displayed a diverse offensive skill set. He had a nice eurostep to finish at the rim and was tough in the paint. Willis likes to shoot the three and score from the perimeter. He forced it a few times when trying to drive on Loganville’s zone and picked up a few charges and turnovers. Learning to play within himself will help long term. He’s got a lot of tools to work with. If he chooses to play basketball in college, playing against high level competition will help him greatly. JUCOs will want to keep his name in mind moving forward.
2023 6-2 W Sherman Johnson – Loganville
A standout baseball player, Sherman Johnson impressed with his energy on both ends of the floor. He defended at a high level and competed inside, double-doubling with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson has fast-twitch fibers. He’s quick off his feet and moves well laterally. Johnson plays bigger than his size and can earn minutes at a variety of positions. Most of his offense came from 15-feet and in, a majority in the paint. His infectious energy is paramount to Loganville’s success.
2021 6-3 W Omarion Rucker – Madison County
Good things happened when the ball was in Omarion Rucker’s hands. He’s an above-average athlete with nice length. Rucker has versatility. His nose for the ball and his motor make him a valuable piece. Rucker impressed me with his subtle playmaking. Rucker had a handful of nice passes when the offense ran through him. He’s a good glue guy that can help out across the board. Rucker finished with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.
2022 6-6 W Josh Fulton – GAC
In a game that was downright cringeworthy offensively for long stretches of time, Josh Fulton flipped the switch and absolutely dominated in the second half before fouling out. He poured in 19 of GAC’s first 20 points of the second half, scoring at will. Fulton knocked down a three in the process and sprinkled in some mid-range, but a bulk of his production came when he put his head down and turned the corner. Once he beat his first man off the dribble no one was able to challenge him at the rim. His baseline drives were often finished with authority. Fulton posted 23 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 3 blocks. When he is engaged and aggressive, GAC is a different team.
