Valdosta
The Wildcats made the trip up to Stone Mountain and made a statement with their athleticism, physicality and skill. The four horsemen of 2021 6-0 G Melvin Smith, 2021 6-0 G Dorrien Douglas, 2021 5-11 G Stanley Haliburton and 2021 6-4 F Ty’Addrian Newsome brought energy and toughness. Smith showed that he was skillful driving to his left and pulling up for mid-range jumpers. Douglas turned heads with his ability to get to the basket and his on-ball defense. Haliburton possesses long arms and can jump with anybody while Newsome is a steady combo-forward that did most of his work in the paint, rebounding and finishing off tough baskets inside. Last year’s 24-4 Sweet 16 season was no fluke. The Wildcats will continue to play at a high level under Coach Darrell Lockhart.
2022 6-3 G Parker Mayo – Walton
Parker Mayo was sneaky good at camp. While he wasn’t jumping out of the gym or making highlight plays like some others, Mayo knew what he was best at and played within himself. He scored from the perimeter and was effective from the mid-range. Mayo got to the basket when lanes presented themselves. He is a reliable scoring option on the wing.
2021 5-9 PG Alex Reives – New Creation Christian
The veteran guard played with pace and urgency. Reives took care of the ball and pushed it in transition when the opportunity was there. He was able to play complementary basketball while still mixing in his scoring. Reives can shoot it from outside but also has a strong enough build to get into the lane and finish through contact.
2022 5-10 PG Mark Peah – Archer
A quick little shifty guard, Mark Peah scored in a hurry as he put up points in bunches. Peah has some wiggle to his game and is able to snake his way into the paint. His quickness is apparent on defense as he can frustrate ballhandlers by turning them multiple times.
2023 6-2 G Max Culbreth – Community Christian
There’s a lot to like about Max Culbreth. He played with some savvy and toughness at camp. Only a rising sophomore, Culbreath can attack defenses inside and out. He’s got a nice perimeter shot and can keep defenses honest when slashing. Culbreth finished well in traffic and was a solid all-around teammate.
