We got a chance to catch up on the action on BallerTV and here’s a look at how each of the Oregonians there performed. Note: usually at these camps the pace is very fast (i.e. run and gun) and guards tend to dominate the ball, so players often aren’t able to play the way they usually play.
Malachi Seely-Roberts Malachi Seely-Roberts 6'8" | SF Lincoln | 2023 State OR (2023 Yamhill-Carlton)
Roberts had the best showing out of all the guys from Oregon and he was really able to showcase his main skill at the event – his ability to shoot from distance. The 6-foot-6 forward ran to spots and got open from three and really capitalized on a number of catch and shoot opportunities. Some of his attempts were from well beyond the NBA three point line and his shooting stroke looked pure. Roberts ran the floor extremely well, used his length to make a difference defensively on the perimeter and with some blocks, and even dished out some nice assists. His overall performance earned him a nod to the Top 30 game where despite not getting many touches, he hit a couple of threes – one from beyond NBA range – grabbed a couple of boards and dished out an assist.
Austin Maurer (2024 Cascade Christian)
The first time we saw Maurer this off-season was a couple of weeks ago when he joined an Oregon Prospects 16U team and quite honestly looked a bit timid against older players in the limited minutes he did play. At this event, things were much different for the developing 6-foot-8 post. Playing against guys more his age, Maurer was more confident in his abilities and showed some great skill and versatility to his game, strongly posting up smaller guys while taking bigger guys outside either hitting threes or taking them off the dribble. Defensively he held his own and was active in challenging shot attempts. Maurer earned a nod to the Top 60 game and while had limited touches there, he competed hard. There’s no question the development of the freshman this season will be one to watch.
Moroni Seely-Roberts Moroni Seely-Roberts 6'6" | SF Lincoln | 2023 State OR (2023 Yamhill-Carlton)
Roberts put up some incredible offensive numbers as a freshman and a lot of it was because he often had the ball in his hands so he could create. Unfortunately at the event he really didn’t the chance to fully show his skills as he rarely touched the ball on offense at times. Nevertheless, the 6-foot-6 forward played team ball, ran the floor as well as the guards most of the time, and worked hard on glass and on defense where he looked to challenge almost every shot attempt close to him in the paint. When he did get the ball in position to score, he finished well around the hoop with a soft touch.
Malik Brown Malik Brown 6'0" | PG Tigard | 2023 State OR (2023 Tigard)
Brown had an outstanding freshman campaign at Tigard, rising into the starting lineup and showing immense promise as a floor leader. The 6-foot guard didn’t get to have the ball in his hands as much in this event as he was often paired with other point guards, but he played solid without the ball. He took advantage of the touches he did get, converted some opportunities near the basket and was extra active on the offensive glass. On defense he showed good energy and hustle and he rebounded well for his size on both ends.
Kalim Brown Kalim Brown 6'0" | CG Tigard | 2023 State OR (2023 Tigard)
While he may not have started last season like his brother, Brown certainly was a key part of the Tigers last season coming off of the bench. He made a mark with his energy and aggressiveness all year long and not surprisingly, that was on display at the event. The 6-foot guard showed no fear in getting to the hole, where he drew contact and got to the line. Defensively he stuck with his man and was able to generate some turnovers.
AJ Carter (2023 Tigard)
Carter was the ultimate hustle guy. He focused on tight man-to-man defense, picking guys up court, and really battling for rebounds and loose balls. Often times the long and lanky sophomore was matched up against bigger players but he never backed down. On the offensive end he rarely got any touches and he usually made the extra pass on the ones he did get, but Carter did manage to sneak in a few buckets around the hoop and finished well in transition.
Jeremiah Stigler (2023 Grant)
Stigler played on the Grant freshman team last year and was the one player we had not previously seen. At 6-foot-1 he’s got a pretty solid body for his age and at the camp he showed some offensive ability. The lefty seemed the most comfortable on the wing where he could spot up for open threes or create a bit off the dribble and finish around the basket. There will likely be available minutes on varsity for him this season at Grant.
