Following an impressive sophomore campaign highlighted by an All-WCAC First Team selection, Bishop McNamara’s towering paint presence is hearing from several high major programs.
“I’m currently hearing the most from Louisville, Maryland, Seton Hall, UCONN, Georgia, LSU, and Pittsburgh,” Aire told Prep Hoops during an interview at the New World Combine earlier this month. “I’ve also heard from Michigan, but they haven’t offered me.”
Aire has been hitting the weights this offseason. The 6-foot-10 big man looked physically stronger at the combine, and he confirmed that he’s been lifting regularly intending to get up to 225 pounds by the end of the year. Aire noted that his IQ has also improved as a result of his participation in local open runs featuring pros and college players.
“I’ve been playing a lot of high-level games with pros and college players. They play slower and more focused. You can learn from them,” he said. “I’m starting to see the passing lanes better. I’m finding better angles to get rebounds and put-backs.”
One other part of his overall game that Aire is focused on improving is sliding his feet on defense. For a big guy, he is very good at switching and has the desire to stay in front of guards but will occasionally get caught out and commit a cheap foul. Aire acknowledged that by simply using his length and sliding his feet without reaching, this tendency can be remedied.
Specific details about upcoming high school season remain in doubt, but if it can occur, Aire believes that McNamara could surprise a few folks.
“It’s very possible. We have all the tools we need to win a WCAC championship this year. Everybody just has to lock in and be focused on the same goal. We can do it.”
